Cameron Winter, Paul Thomas Anderson and a piano walk into Carnegie Hall… It’s been a pretty intense year for Cameron Winter and Paul Thomas Anderson. Geese’s Getting Killed rocketed to a level of cultural notoriety few alternative albums have managed in the past decade, dragging with it a retrospective reappraisal of Winter’s solo debut Heavy Metal, while Anderson’s One Battle After Another arrived drowned in acclaim and looming over the Oscars podium like an unmoveable spectre finally being channelled into reality. Their eventual, perhaps inevitable, union is disarmingly understated. A sold-out Carnegie Hall and Benny Safdie of Uncut Gems fame as co-producer is hardly back-to-basics by textbook definition, but Live at Carnegie Hall still feels like a deliberate recentering after the furores smouldering behind them. No flash, no illusion: just voice, piano and one camera in front of a phantasmic crowd. From the first swell of applause to the last, these tears of songs trickle, bursting in droplets onto the keys beneath to become little rectangular annexes of melancholy. The set draws from Heavy Metal, its preceding non-album single and three brand-new songs, all of which traverse a self-contained mythology of self-doubt, avoidant attachment and faith interrogations. Ordinarily, it would seem presumptuous to pronounce something so new as unquestionably inspirational. But even more so than Getting Killed or Heavy Metal, Live at Carnegie Hall already writhes with the untameable promise of influencing a generation of artists. Beyond the set dressing, it possesses an identical intimacy to a teenager premiering songs in their bedroom. So you better start walking, the miles don’t seem so long from here… Read Beau Waddell’s full review now on Still Listening. 🔗

Learn what 7-year-old Cameron put on his iPod Nano. Full list at jammy.to/cameron. Jammy is a journal for album lovers and concert goers. Join the beta on iPhone via link in bio :~) Jammy’s ‘albums that made’ series, installment two. This time featuring Paul Thomas Anderson’s best friend and Geese’s head goose, Cameron Winter. 9 albums that impacted him, and how he feels about them in his own words. This was a lil research project, so tell me in the comments if I missed any good ones. I love when your favorite artists can introduce you to entire pockets of music you had never dug into before. Discovering albums this way has had a big impact on me. I want Jammy to be a place for that, so each of the carousels in this series will have a more comprehensive list in the app. Lmk which artist you want me to feature next. Photo creds: Adam Powell, Lewis Evans, Bowen Fernie, Owen Lehman, Alexa Viscius Cameron Winter's face inside a gold oval frame. Title: albums that made Cameron Winter
