To really look (and keep looking) at the actions and conditions of recognition and how it’s all folded into response is an ongoing project… but “joining” work and ideas and responding with aliveness in motion offers something beyond the conceptual. It’s the final week to see our NI: Natural Intelligence exhibition - stop in and enjoy works like this from artist @cameronkgainer and many more! The artists of NI: Natural Intelligence consider nature as a timeless creative source, endlessly generating mysterious and infinite meanings. Lisa Sette observes “In contrast to AI, nature is intelligent far beyond human speculation. These artists focus on the inherent beauty and intelligence of the natural world as a solace in our fraught world of plastic and screens.”  To create this photograph, artist Cameron Gainer traveled to Elkmont, Tennessee, to a small abandoned settlement in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. There, he photographed the Photinus-carolinus, a unique species of synchronous firefly.  This luminous organism appears there for approximately three weeks every year, and nowhere else on the planet. Peak flashing occurs in early June. The fireflies take one to two years to mature from larvae but will live as adults for only about 21 days. Once they transform into their adult form, they do not eat. They mate and then they die. During this brief time, their light illuminates the landscape.  In this photograph the light from these organisms makes the landscape visible, a landscape that is terrestrial and yet identifies as celestial. It is through the absence of detail (a rupture in the image) that the light creates a collapse of foreground and background, expanding the horizon into space. These images are not intended as documentary photography, but rather as analogies to chance and the synchronicity of life. On the surface, these images capture a particular phenomenon. But they illustrate a larger metaphor for the organization of the universe.
