Javier Ambrossi & Javier Calvo's century-spanning drama ‘La Bola Negra’ is many things: It's heartbreaking and hopeful. Sweeping and intimate. Emotional and thought-provoking. Personal and political. Universal and unabashedly queer.

But "racy" & "provocative"?

Even as it’s been showered in praise and accolades, ‘La Bola Negra’ has been referred to as “sexy war epic,” a label which some have pointed out is reductive, if not flat-out misleading.
So what does it mean for the film to be considered “racy”? Is it “provocative” just because it dares to depict queer love on the scale and scope of so many historical epics before it? Queerty decided to take these questions to the filmmakers themselves who weighed in on the debated label, and why they consider ‘La Bola Negra’ "a classical movie with a contemporary vision."

We hosted a “No Agenda” dinner for journalists and media friends. Not about what they do, who they write for, or what platform they represent, but simply about who they are.

With so much change happening around us, we wanted to create space to gather, laugh, dance, connect, and remind ourselves of the power of our individual and collective cultural agency.

We talk a lot about building community, but we have to be just as intentional about maintaining it.

And sometimes that looks like good food, great company, a little dancing, and laughing so hard that, even if just for a moment, we forget about everything else going on in the world.

Because we all deserve a little joy. And sometimes, the only agenda we need is each other.

With Love,

This week, Orville Peck makes the jump from country crooner to action star in Street Fighter. But he’s not the first icon of music to do so: Back in 1994, his friend & collaborator Kylie Minogue starred in the original big-screen adaptation of the video game, and he says he texted her immediately when he got the part.

And he’s got some tea, too: Apparently they tried to get Kylie to make a cameo in this Street Fighter! While Orville reveals she was “so down to do it,” timing just didn’t align, but he’s still hoping to orchestrate a photo op with his movie’s Cammy—actress Mel Jarnson—or maybe leave the door open for something in a potential sequel.

Regardless, Kylie told Orville filming the ‘94 Street Fighter was “one of the most fun experiences of her life,” and it sounds like he felt the same this go-around, especially because he was emboldened to bring his full self to the project, leaning into queer energy to his portrayal of the masked character Vega.

Capping off an amazing year at the movies, Anne Hathaway clearly loved the opportunity to “get a little freaky with it” in Verity, her new erotic thriller co-starring Dakota Johnson & Josh Hartnett.

In the past seven months alone, we’ve seen her go full pop star mode in Mother Mary, save journalism in The Devil Wears Prada 2, battle dinos in The End Of Oak Street, and give an appropriately epic performance in The Odyssey.

But with Verity, Hathaway finally has the chance to cut loose and go full villain mode with a character who was apparently as much fun to play as she is to watch. Speaking with Queerty, the icon & ally shares which go-for-broke take she was shocked made it into the final cut.

“It's wild that a queer movie got made so long ago about this very ‘American’ topic, when I feel like, at the time, being gay was not an American ideal or value” - Miles Heizer

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Heizer will be starring in @celebrationthtr’s staged reading of the play-turned-’05 movie ‘WTC View’—directed by original star Michael Urie—which takes an honest look at post-9/11 life through the lens of one gay man as he searched for a new roommate in his Manhattan apartment.

Ahead of that reading, Queerty brought together @younggoth, @michaelurielikesit, and playwright @hifibrian to share their own memories from that unforgettable day, and to unpack the unique legacy of ‘WTC View.’ You can watch/read our full conversation at the link in our bio.
