What does Big Fatty’s Spanking Shack have to do with the private owners at the Nike Missile base? And how does it connect with the Denton tunnels?

Well today was the day we’ve been waiting for for a long time. Denton is home to some legendary figures of character and creation. Our search for the tunnel system ran parallel with a lot of the research that’s already been done by some industrious Denton folk heroes.

More in the episode, which debuts next week! And breaking news: will be on display at the @untcolab for the final week of October. So if you want answers, you’ll know where to go. More details soon!

Do the Denton tunnels connect to the Courthouse?

Today we spoke with Kim from the Denton County Office of History and Culture.

“We get people asking all the time about the tunnels. Tours will want to go into the basement… the firefighters even came in. We thought they were secretly giving us an inspection.”

The legends say that the Courthouse had an underground tunnel to transport people from the holding cell to the actual jail, three blocks away.

Kim let us take a look at blueprints from the recent HVAC remodel to help find the answers.

What are those answers? You’ll have to ask her yourself or watch the episode when it comes out!

One of the many reasons I started the show is to make sure that as we grow, we don’t lose sight of what makes Denton more unique than any other gentrifying, growing, suburban city. We love our art. We love our creativity. We love our weird.

Having lived all over the country, I’m so thankful that we have an incredible record store (multiple but this post is about @recycledbooksdenton ) where I can find the one vinyl I’ve been wanting since high school.

This album, one I’ll confidently say is one of the most gorgeous ever recorded, reassured to a growing, impressionable me that it’s okay to be sensitive and thoughtful. That being a “man” doesn’t mean closing off your sensitivity but, in fact embracing them makes you more human; something we should all strive for regardless of societal expectations.

It put me on the path to making documentaries and meeting the most incredible people. Now, 21 years later, I have a program watched by thousands of people that directly reflects the impact of art on my life.

If you’re ever waiting in my office, ask to listen to this album.

And thank you Recycled for keeping the soul of Denton alive. I know it isn’t easy. You remind us not to lose sight of who we are, even in hard times and budget shortfalls.

Went on a pretty adventurous hunt for some tunnels today. Can’t say where. Can’t say what we found. But I can show this ominous photo.
