“To create one must first question everything.” — Eileen Gray.

Curiosity has always fueled my deep and insatiable desire to explore, learn, and understand the unknown. I’m constantly asking questions, seeking new experiences, and challenging my own boundaries of knowledge, especially when it comes to design. Lately, my creative predilections have drawn inspiration from 1920s and 30s interiors and one material that has captured my eye is lacquer. Its sheen feels sensual and evocative of a bygone era. Looking to the past, Eileen Gray’s perfectly designed Brick Screen in black lacquered wood from 1922 imbues elegance into a space while also making a statement. But new designers are also starting to use lacquer in unexpected and innovative ways. During my trip to Salone in Milan earlier this year, the SALA D’ATTESA exhibition by @Studioutte used lacquer finishes in deeply rich forest greens and oxblood reds. And then on a recent trip to Paris, I fell in love with the lacquered accents in the @hotelchateaudeau designed by @necchiarchitecture. I share more about my love for lacquer in @dominomag Home Front newsletter along with some of my other design obsessions of late. Scroll through for a sneak peek into my world and there’s a prize for those who scroll to the end!

Even as time passes, art survives through the stories and friendships that nurtured it into being. One year ago on the slopes of Jebel Akhdar, Oman—dancing on the cliff’s edge and witnessing the rock rose harvest.

In April this year my team and I travelled to Oman, home to @Amouageofficial, the house of high perfumery commissioned by the late Sultan and one of the most elaborate perfume brands in the world. Under the helm of the inimitable Creative Director @RenaudSalmon, the house has been undergoing an explosive renaissance since 2019, spearheaded by the magic and stories of the fragrances, backed by heritage and innovation.

On returning to London, mind refreshed and filled with alchemy, I collaborated with the house in bottling the essence of six core fragrances into a series of visuals. I’m proud to present GUIDANCE, part of chapter III: Escape of the Odyssey Collection and first from my surrealist-inspired still life series created for Amouage.
