Our sweet sweet Liam passed away this week. He went peacefully in his usual spot on the couch surrounded by love from Ethan and me. We will miss our Limikins, Mr. Leamur, Yams, and Leemy. He was truly the best boy!

I always describe Spurlock Museum as having historically focused on the anthropological/archaeological nature of its collection. Now, however, the Museum leans more into the exploration of world cultures. With culture being such a broad concept, it leaves the @spurlockmuseum open to engage the widest possible audience around a diversity of cultural objects and themes. (Check out images of the permanent galleries in AAMG's Stories.)
.
In Fall 2019, we opened the exhibit In Her Closet—How to Make a Drag Queen! 👸🏽This community-curated (two amazing graduate students/drag artists 🙌🏾: María Arte Susya Purisma Tolentino and Veronica Bleaus) exhibit grew Spurlock’s relationships and partnerships with some members of the Champaign-Urbana LGBTQ+ community.
.
During the run of the exhibit, we hosted a drag show, a series of art making workshops called Art with a Queen🎨, gallery talks called Let’s Have a Kiki 🗣, and conversations focused on Gender Bending. (I cropped these images to fit IG, so they don't give the way they should! 🤦🏾‍♀️😩)
.
Centering the voices and narratives of BIPOC and other groups is critical to Spurlock Museum’s mission and core values. We aim to respect diverse ways of knowing and take a back seat to the authority of first-person narratives. - Monica M. Scott, @spurlockmuseum
