If your best ideas only come out after someone hires you, how will they know you’re worth hiring?

I’ve become more comfortable sharing the thinking behind my work: the frameworks, the questions I ask, and how I approach a problem.

There’s a reasonable concern that comes with that.
It came up from an entrepreneur in this talk.

“If I explain how to do it, won’t people just do it themselves?”

Some will. And if something I share helps them make progress, that’s a good outcome.

Others will understand the work more clearly and realize they’d benefit from having someone lead them through it, provide external perspective, and even them apply it.

I’ve heard this thinking is echoed by other business leaders for years. Alex Hormozi advocates giving away your knowledge and charging for implementation. Seth Godin has long encouraged sharing ideas so they can spread. Both remind me that sharing your thinking can create opportunities.

Knowing the steps doesn’t mean you have the time, capacity or experience to make the right decisions along the way. Most of us have saved enough useful advice to keep us busy for years.

When someone hires you, your value includes your judgment.
How you adapt an approach to their situation. What you prioritize.
How you help them follow through.

Sharing your thinking gives people a chance to experience some of that before they ever book a conversation.

This is a part of why I believe in creating useful content and doing talks. A practical framework, a thoughtful explanation or an honest lesson from your work can help someone today and build trust over time.

You can share generously and still have a valuable service to sell.

Fall in full swing, from classrooms to camp to conferences and of course cafes. September weather was summer weather though.

Every Friday, I write The Intersection newsletter sharing what I’m learning and connecting the dots along the way.

You’re a professional, a leader, a founder — you’re not expected to show up the same way as a creator.

Part of my response to a question on being uncomfortable being everywhere online, at my session on leader visibility.

In an expertise business, the thinking is part of the product. Clients are buying your judgment, taste, perspective and ability to recognize what matters.

How do they see that? They find see your thinking through a post, presentation, podcast, referral or conversation, long before they ever speak with you directly.

Yesterday at Camp re:Connect, I spoke with agency owners and marketing leaders about becoming more visible, without being everywhere, or doing the thinking you’ve already done.

There were some really great questions I plan to share.

My session shared how leaders should:
• develop an ownable idea others associate them with
• turn past work into visible proof
• choose formats that carry their judgment
• show up through feeds, owned channels and real rooms
• capture the thinking happening inside the work
• apply The Content Ecosystem to include leaders, teams, customers and partners

Nearly 3/4 of hidden B2B buyers have little or no interaction with sales teams or processes, meaning that your content as a leader may be doing the introduction.

Thought leadership helps people recognize how you think before they need what you sell. That recognition shapes who gets remembered, recommended and invited into the room.
