RIP Big Bad Baby Bertha 1/1/12-2/2/26💔We rescued this girl just to “foster” her — and that didn’t take. She was the most mischievous, curious, smart, keen, tricky, coy, trouble-making dog on earth. We joked she had the nine lives of a cat. Cheating death was an art form for her, which is what makes it so surreal that she couldn’t cheat it one last time.The pounds of raw steaks, entire pizzas, cupcakes, and MANY birthday cakes she ingested never got her. She almost met her match after eating a dozen donuts when she mistook a prescription bag on the counter for the last donut and served ADHD meds to herself and her sister, landing them both in the ICU. She escaped and dodged a car just to have her sister’s paw sideswiped last year. She once swam after a duck in the spillway nearly half a mile offshore, saved only because Roger and three tipsy floating teenagers noticed her going under.She saw bird seed trickling from the feeder, dug it up, knocked it over, ate the entire container, and landed in the ICU. She drank something that blocked her bladder and ended up in surgery and diapers for a month. Just last year she escaped and got stuck between a concrete wall and fence after she was too chunky to squeeze through — two hours later, in 30-degree weather, we found her thanks to an Apple AirTag. Without it, she wouldn’t have been found.She learned how to work door handles of all kinds and even escaped to a movie set in New Orleans by traversing the length of our house through a 13-inch crawlspace for nearly 100 yards (Shawshank style). She lived for a good DIG. So many holes. So many escapes. Once in New Orleans she dug into someone else’s yard, got trapped behind a 10-foot fence, and introduced us to new neighbors after a four-hour rescue mission. Continues in comments…
