Triumphant return to my childhood heaven! Everything is different as an adult of course, but I can see now that the kids are there to experience the magic, and now it’s my job to help make the magic. And I’m so happy to be able to do that. I loved my summer at Camp Toccoa and the memories I made will hopefully help carry me through the anniversary of my brother’s death and another year without him. He would have loved to be a part of this.

I’m hiking 10 miles to save the summer camp that changed my life, and I’m personally matching up to $5,000!

Camp Toccoa has been central to my life since 2012 — first as a camper, then staff, and now as Vice Chair of the board. It gave me lifelong friends, my first job, and the spark that led me to a career in education policy and advocacy.

Like many nonprofits, Camp Fire Georgia was hit hard by the pandemic. Our summer camp, the heart of our mission, shut down for the first time in 93 years. Since then, we’ve reopened and worked hard to rebuild our programs. We’ve made incredible progress, but the truth is, we are still struggling financially, and we can’t keep going without community support.

That’s why I’m joining the Camp Fire Georgia Hike-a-thon: every mile I hike is for the next generation of kids who deserve the same magic that shaped me. Sponsor me by the mile or make a one-time gift (even $5, $10, $25 is huge!!!)—every dollar counts, and with my match, your impact is doubled.

#Summer is well underway at Camp Fire! Here is what we have been up to:

🤗 @campfire_ga staff have spent the past few weeks preparing for their first campers of the season (this week!) They can't wait for their campers to arrive!

🐐 @campfire_northshore had so much fun at their field day! They had team-building activities, a petting zoo, face painting, and tattoos.

🫶🏿 Week 1 of @campfireheartland's After-School Program was a blast! From the first moment, the kids dove into a whirlwind of fun, learning, tasty treats, and new friendships.

🎶 #CampFireAlum stopped by @campfire_sanduskycounty to swap stories and sing Camp Fire songs!

🥾 @campfire_sunshine's "Light a Spark" campers enjoyed their first-ever bus ride and a fun field trip to Walker Road Park. They had a great time hiking the trail and playing on the playground. Meanwhile, the IGNITE kids, their awesome 5th and 6th graders, had a fun-filled day with a cool Coke and Mentos experiment! It was an all-around great day filled with smiles and adventure.

🌿 @campfire_minnesota opened up camp so families could meet the camp counselors before summer camp started.

👟 @campfirecolumbia's site manager, Troy, launched an incredible project with their middle schoolers of making and customizing their own shoes. Troy reached out to a professional shoe designer to make an instructional video for the students to follow and get professional insight. By the end of the project, the students even had the necessary skills to restore and customize shoes they may already have in their closets if they wanted to!

Today is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day! 💫

This holiday was started by Camp Fire, which was originally called Camp Fire Girls at the organization's start. Their mission is to "guide young people on their journey to self-discovery."

Molly McIntire would have potentially been able to participate in Camp Fire Girls during her time, though in her book Molly Saves the Day, she instead goes to the fictional summer camp Camp Gowonagin ("go on again and try!"). During World War II, summer camps were especially popular for kids, because with many fathers away from home in the military, it was difficult to take family vacations. Summer camps offered a fun get-away alternative and taught patriotic values like teamwork, living with less, survival skills, and supporting one another - all important to the success of America in winning the war.

Absolutely Incredible Kid Day encourages adults to write a note to an incredible kid. Today, who will you shout out as an incredible kid? What would you say to your former child self to encourage them to be their most incredible self?🤔

TIMELINE:

1910: Camp Fire Girls was established.

1975: Camp Fire, America's first multiracial, multicultural, and nonsectarian organization for girls, went co-ed.

1997: Absolutely Incredible Kid Day began.

2010: Camp Fire celebrated 100 years, with participants lighting campfires nationwide at the same time to mark the occasion.

2012: Camp Fire started teaching kids and teens SEL (Social Emotional Learning) skills via the new Thrive{ology} framework.

2019: Camp Fire recognized 3 kids for their resilience, determination, courage, compassion, and joy - Ohio 5th grader Hala Khalil, who quickly learned English after arriving from Jordan; drummer Jessica Albertson; and baseball player Davy Bradley.
