Another 10-week cohort began last Thursday in our after-school leadership program. It starts with building a healthy relationship with ourselves and the people around us. Working with students in our local school system while they’re still figuring a lot of this out is prevention work. Someone who can be kind with themselves and their peers is better prepared to lead, and less likely to run into harder challenges down the road. This isn’t about labels. It’s about showing up for students and helping them build on what they learn about themselves and how they see others.

Session one opens with Curiosity & Play. Students got to know the program, the staff, each other, and the spaces we spend time in together. Through games and mindfulness, they noticed something about themselves and the people they’re sharing this with. It brings in self-reflection and observation, mindfulness and ease, and lays the groundwork for everything that gets built on it.

Curiosity & Play. We started there yesterday. We didn’t talk about it, we practiced it. We got outside, got into games, got into trying without needing to be good at it. And what happened was connection. People showed up different when the stakes weren’t about performance. That’s the whole thing. That’s the work.

It's happening! We are doing it again!
So excited to be back at Lake Eden next week 10/16-10/18 for the Lake Eden Reunion. For some the festival has already begun, LEAF global artists residencies start today as artists from around the world visit Asheville schools and surrounding communities teaching their cultures and arts to the local students. LEAF Schools and Streets has been doing this work for years and touched the lives of tens of thousands of students, led by Adama Dembele and working with Schree and the LEAF International programs. These amazing programs and the work of LEAF Global Arts continue under their new home, Camp Grier.
There has been a lot of confusion about the future of LEAF Global Arts and these programs over the past year, rest assured the future is bright. I am beyond excited that these programs that have meant so much to this community, so many people around the world, get to continue. The challenges of the pandemic, catastrophic hurricanes, political movements declaring war on the arts, all led to some growing pains that almost ended LEAF. The heart and the vision remained strong but the path was unclear, LEAF love and hope made a chrysalis waiting for the right time emerge and show off how beautiful a metamorphic reset can be. Thanks to our amazing friends at Camp Grier, the time is now.
Think of symbiosis in nature, Camp Grier is the beautiful Anemone home and the LEAF programs are the clownfish who now have lots of new clownfish friends.
Camp Grier will be at the Lake Eden Reunion, please visit them and learn about everything they are doing in and around Old Fort and offer them the most gratuitous welcome to Lake Eden and learn all about the bright future of the LEAF programs, Lake Eden Events, and Camp Grier working together.
Back to the reunion! The line up is stacked, music, dancing, contra, healing arts, elf haven, check out the Lake Eden Reunion page for the schedule and line up, also, don't miss the LEAF book, "Live Life Like a Festival" release on Sunday, telling the story of the last 30 years of LEAF featuring 10,000 photos from myself and so many other photographers. For tickets or volunteer info, go to @lakeedenreunion

An invitation you won’t want to miss!
Will you join the party?

Stay for the day, or the whole weekend. All ages, user groups, and skill levels welcome! Give back to the trails and celebrate alongside others volunteers who care for the Grandfather District of Pisgah National Forest!

We’re getting more excited every day to bring this awesome community together again at Camp Grier. At this past Spring Trail Work Weekend, volunteers contributed 1,175 hours across 16 different projects. We also had over 25 sponsors and partners show up in support! Now that’s a huge and lasting impact we can make together!

So what do we do in addition trail work…
…we play outside, visit the vendor village, eat more snacks, drink local beverages, hang out and do camp like things, ALL before we gather with our trays in the dining hall for the famous taco dinner 🌮 w/ raffle & awards, plus…the bonfire! 🔥

RSVP - link in bio.
Share with your peeps.
Nov. 6-8 - Fall Trail Work Weekend
