I've asked around. Saskatoon doesn't top many people's Canadian travel bucket lists.

But here's why it should.

The South Saskatchewan River cuts right through the heart of the city, and on a clear prairie evening, the light on that water hits differently than anywhere else in this country. It's genuinely stunning in a way that sneaks up on you.

The Remai Modern is one of the best contemporary art galleries in Canada — full stop. Not "for a prairie city." Just one of the best.

Then there's the food. Chef Dale MacKay put Saskatoon on the culinary map, and the city ran with it. From Odd Couple to the indie gems along Broadway Avenue, there's a confidence and creativity in the dining scene here that would quietly embarrass a lot of what's passing for "food culture" in Ottawa right now. Toronto and Vancouver can keep their lineups and their price tags.

And Wanuskewin Heritage Park — a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting just outside the city — is one of the most meaningful cultural experiences you can have anywhere in this country.

Saskatoon isn't trying to be something it's not. It's just genuinely, quietly, stubbornly excellent.

That's usually my favorite kind of place.
