My photos on Times Square? Never, never did I see this coming. There was plenty of planning weeks ahead of time. Plan A, Plan B, Plan C…but I didn’t see the finalized artwork until just 2 days before the trip. Seeing my photos on the page blew my mind. And then the moment of the photo op came. The media day photos I captured months before, larger than life, shining in the Big Apple. It was a moment I will never forget. 💜📸⚽️

A redaction is usually seen as a negative, especially with how it’s been used recently. Usually, it’s a tool used to hide or take information away. But what if we’re thinking about redactions in the wrong way?

Take parts of Latin America, like Mexico or Chile, where it’s illegal to advertise with cartoon characters on cereal boxes and other packaging to prevent influencing children’s food choices. It’s not about hiding the characters; it’s about drawing focus to the information you should be paying attention to, the ingredients inside the cereal.

Here are a few examples of creators flipping the idea of redaction on its head. Slide 8 forces you to focus on a father and son because the world around them is gone; or Slide 5, where the absence of the full photo and its fragmented feel mimics what it feels like when you’re trying to remember an old memory; or the last slide, where blurred redaction lines come together to build something new entirely. Instead of redactions being used as a tool to take away, they’re being used to add to something, direct attention, and create meaning.

What are some ways you would use redaction or the censorship aesthetic? What are some creative examples of using negative space or subtracting that stood out to you?

Unrelated but related, M.I.A.’s Paper Planes uses cashier sounds and g*nshots to allude to robbery. While the music video was extremely popular, MTV famously censored the song’s g*nshots and references to cannabis on their network. Ironically, the explicit version of the song was also widely mistaken to be censored because of those same elements, thinking they replaced explicit lyrics, showcasing an example of art through subtractive or symbolic substitutes outside of a literal approach.

Being watched is a part of our everyday life. A follower commenting on a new video you posted, a camera on every building in your neighborhood, or your internet provider watching everything you do online. But recently, something has changed; surveillance is no longer just invasive, it’s an aesthetic.

Creators have turned this idea of being watched on its head. We’re no longer hiding from the camera; instead, we are starting to point it at ourselves in an effort to understand what is going on around us. Art is a direct reflection of the state of the culture, always shifting and moving in response to the world. And right now, the world is unsure about a lot. The increased interaction between humans and AI, constant data breaches, companies selling your information, targeted censorship, unrelenting ads, the list goes on. So what’s changed?

Creators across the board have adopted this dystopian, almost Big Brother all seeing eye type of aesthetic. Orwell 2026. If you scroll on any social platform for a few seconds, you’ll see it. CCTV like images and videos, edits of movement being tracked, blurred out faces. It has even made its way into fashion as a way to draw attention to specific things, like material choice. This aesthetic channels the way information feels to us right now: fragmented, tracked, categorized, chaotic.

Heres a few creatives who have been using this idea of surveillance in a couple of interesting ways:

@hyper.tek - Tracking boxes on text.
@danneuenhaus - Car scan.
@icarusrebornstudios - combination of text, voice, and visual edits to push dystopian vibe.
@prprtym - Music video using Surveillance Aesthetic.
@just_d3vine_ - tracking boxes used to highlight details on an outfit.
@aletiune - distorted face with tracking box.

We can’t help but wonder how far is too far. What happens when they stop watching us and instead we start watching ourselves? Is this reclaiming control? Or internalizing surveillance so deeply that we become our own monitors?

What do you think?

Have you been noticing this aesthetic? How does it make you feel? And in what other ways could you see the Surveillance Aesthetic being applied?
