2026-27 Breakout Candidates

Carolina Hurricanes: Logan Stankoven

Stankoven’s postseason was a breakout in itself, showing exactly why Carolina was so excited to acquire him. However, we still haven’t seen him put together a truly dominant regular season, as he’s hovered around the half point-per-game mark.

With a full season in Carolina, more offensive responsibility, and a chance to earn consistent top-six and power-play minutes, I think this is the year he takes the next step.

Do you think Stankoven has a 60+ point season in him? 🌀

MADDOX DAGENAIS

A big, powerful center with legitimate offensive touch, Maddox Dagenais combines frame, scoring, and skating to project as a middle-six NHL forward with the upside to grow into a second-line center.

Dagenais’s game is built around his ability to affect play in hard areas. At 6-foot-4, he uses his size to protect pucks, win interior battles, and create offense off the cycle or around the net, while his shot gives him a clear finishing weapon when he gets time and space. Scouts also like that he has taken a real step forward offensively this season, producing at a point-per-game pace and showing more consistency as the year went on.

Jackson Blake earned Player of the Week honors after recording 1 goal, 1 assist, and 2 blocks in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 3–0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Carolina set the tone early with Taylor Hall’s goal just 3:47 into the first period, then leaned on a complete defensive effort and Brandon Bussi’s 22-save shutout to close out the series 4–2 and win the franchise’s second Stanley Cup.

Blake assisted Hall’s opening goal, then doubled Carolina’s lead at 13:31 of the second period by finishing Logan Stankoven’s feed from the edge of the circle. His two-way impact also showed up defensively with 2 blocked shots as the Hurricanes shut down Vegas throughout the night before Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal to seal the championship.

The performance capped a standout postseason for Blake, who set a Hurricanes franchise record with seven multi-point games in one playoff run and became the third player in Whalers/Hurricanes history to reach 20 points in a single postseason. Carolina finished the playoffs 16–3, the fewest games needed to win the Stanley Cup since 1988, while Blake’s goal and assist helped deliver the Cup-clinching win.

Nikolaj Ehlers earned Player of the Week honors after recording 1 goal, 2 assists, and 1 hit in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 5–3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. Carolina jumped out to a 3–1 first-period lead before Vegas battled back to tie the game in the second, setting up a tight third period with the series on the line.

Ehlers assisted Jackson Blake’s first-period goal to make it 2–0, then helped create Jordan Staal’s go-ahead goal at 6:32 of the third when Staal buried the rebound of Ehlers’ shot while diving near the right post. He sealed the win with an empty-net goal from behind his own goal line with 54.9 seconds remaining, finishing off a three-point night as Carolina evened the series at 2–2.

The performance continued Ehlers’ strong Stanley Cup Final, giving him another major impact game in his first season with Carolina. He later joined Connor McDavid and Mario Lemieux as the only players since 1990 with consecutive three-point games in the Stanley Cup Final, further cementing his role as one of the Hurricanes’ biggest offensive difference-makers.

Logan Stankoven earned Player of the Week honors after recording 1 goal, 2 assists, and 5 hits in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 6–1 win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final. Carolina took control early with three first-period goals, closing out the series in five games and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years.

Stankoven assisted Taylor Hall’s opening goal at 9:17 of the first period, then scored at 15:12 on a snap shot from the right circle to give Carolina a 2–0 lead. He added another assist on Jackson Blake’s second-period goal, finishing with three points, four shots, and five hits as the Hurricanes built a 5–0 lead before Montreal finally scored in the third.

The performance helped Carolina finish off Montreal with a dominant clinching win and continue one of the strongest postseason runs in franchise history. Stankoven’s goal was his team-leading ninth of the playoffs, and his three-point Game 5 pushed the Hurricanes into a Stanley Cup Final matchup with Vegas.

CAROLINA HURRICANES 2025-26 SEASON OUTLOOK

Carolina was already one of the best teams in the league and then they went and added Ehlers this offseason. They have great depth, great defence and good enough goaltending to take them all the way. Kotkaniemi is obviously a weak point at 2C but that’s something that can be addressed at the deadline if they feel it’s holding the team back. Obviously Carolina’s biggest challenge the past few years has been getting through the conference finals, not a bad challenge to have, and I think if they can click at the right time there’s no reason this can’t be the year the go all the way.
