Just returned from a filmmaking immersion with the master Pedro Costa, surrounded by incredible talents from all over the world. Maybe I’ll dream that I’m still there.
Amid mental and physical storms, I reached out for the hand of Mayan culture to guide me through the humid, dark heat, among tarantulas and giant moths that also supported me, a foreigner to everything there.
On my birthday, I thought I was alone in the midst of the whispers of a hurricane, a massive downpour, with nonexistent internet, heartfelt messages stuck, and love calls interrupted - until the storm passed. It might sound romantic, but it was literal. That’s when I met the clowns, brothers Quico and Patricia, and their enchanting family, like a gift. They also became screenwriters to create our film, inspired by the sacred Mayan book Popol Vuh. I was fascinated by the complexity of the gods, who go beyond good and evil. Clowns are like that too — not entirely happy, but capable of building new worlds, even when they are broken.
Pedro’s words float in my mind.
