roll the clock back to early 2020. as the world descended into the pandemic, i sought refuge in my basement studio to tackle an idea i had been mulling over since fall of 2019. in my mind i envisioned a device that would afford me control over the state (on/off), spin, and position of lights as they moved around a subject during a long-exposure photograph. essentially, controlled light painting. over the following 6 months i learned some basic mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering and constructed a system dubbed "the halo machine". it's taken me until now to finally make this video showcasing it’s creation, some behind the scenes footage, and some resulting content. to be completely honest, i am still in absolute awe that people willingly came down into that basement and sat inside it for my experiments. to all of my subjects: thank you. i love you. you are amazing humans:)
