Don Giovanni, presented by Opera UCT. October 22-25, 2026 Baxter Theatre Thrilling production. Mesmerising psycho thriller - three hours and 15 minutes of utterly gripping opera-theatre. I sat on the edge of my seat - literally- during Act 2. I attended the FDR tonight, October 20, as I am unable to attend the opening. I would go again if I had an opportunity. Yes, that good. It is a very busy weekend. Staging is by Talia Stern (French-American director). Design is by Allegra Bernacchioni. The cast - Opera UCT cast and chorus - is accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Peggy Wu and Jeremy Silver are alternating as conductors. Peggy Wu (31 - young and talented) is a current Jette Parker Artist at the Royal Ballet and Opera. And here she is in Cape Town, conducting this mind blowing production. It’s a production which veers increasingly to the dark side - with flickers of humour. This Don Giovanni is the arch narcopath (a mix of Narcissistic Personality Disorder NPD and Antisocial Personality Disorder ASPD), who will not waiver - even in the face of death - as he totters unhinged on the gallows of a banquet table. Allegra Bernacchioni’s set is a masterpiece - minimalist, stark, stripped back, shrouded and veiled with scaffolding, climaxing in an epic denouement with a grand and dramatic tableaux. There are two casts. The cast that we saw tonight was outstanding - with vocal and theatrical excellence. It is a rave from me. These production pics by Kim Stevens We were asked not to take pics tonight as it was the FDR. The lighting was sublime - interplay of shadows - light, darkness; concealing, masking; revealing. The surtitles are excellent- English and isixhosa- cued in live. I was chatting to students at Opera UCT, at interval. They learn Italian. French and German. They know what they are singing. It shows with precise articulation. Mozart’s music is a joy and offsets the darkness. Although there is a lovely sense of clown and buffoon which is laced into this production. Voices meet orchestra. At the sitzprobe, the singers and orchestra rehearse together with their attention on the music. Balance, phrasing and timing come into focus as everyone listens and responds to one another. For Opera UCT’s Don Giovanni, this brings the cast and chorus together with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra as they prepare Mozart’s score for the Baxter stage. It is part of the collective work behind every performance, from the intimacy of a solo voice to the force of the full ensemble. We open this Thursday.
