Dr. Sandra Pulido, here

As the first person in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and now a PhD, this moment feels bigger than me.

It belongs to my mom, who sacrificed so much so my sister and I could have opportunities she never had. It belongs to my family, who believed in me every step of the way. It belongs to my friends, who listened to me talk about my dissertation for years, celebrated the small victories, and carried me through the difficult moments.

It belongs to my professors and mentors, who challenged me, guided me, and helped me grow into the scholar I am today. It belongs to my students, who remind me every day why education matters. It belongs to my colleagues and the Maybeck community, who supported me while I balanced teaching full-time and pursuing a doctorate.

It belongs to my partner, who walked beside me through this chapter of my life, celebrated my successes, and loved me through the stress, doubts, and long nights.

As a first-generation college student, a Latina, and a queer woman, there were many moments when I questioned whether I belonged in these spaces. Today, I know that I do.

Thank you to every person who believed in me, encouraged me, challenged me, supported me, and loved me along the way. I did not get here alone.

With a grateful heart,

Dr. Sandra Pulido

“For what it’s worth… it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start over again.”
