POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Working for the Governor is amongst the most rewarding jobs in public service – it is also amongst the most grueling.

It is more intense still when you’re working day and night on issues impacting underrepresented and marginalized folks and the workforces that support them.

It was a pleasure to discuss this and more with my former boss, Jihoon Kim, in my stint as a guest host with @capitolpressroom.

Often times, the public does not understand what a role like “Deputy Secretary for Human Services and Mental Hygiene” means in the context of state government.

The goal for episodes like this one is to peel back the curtain, demystify these types of roles, and to humanize the people behind this critically important work.

In Jihoon’s case, it meant managing a portfolio of over 10 different state agencies with tens of thousands of employees and tens of billions budget dollars.

Their work supports millions of New Yorkers, including people with developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, and substance use disorders, in addition to those in juvenile justice settings, those in need of public assistance, child care programming, and so many more.

Among several topics, we discussed:

🔵 What the day-to-day looks like in these jobs (Spoiler: it is constantly putting out fires)

🔵 The importance of building a strong team to handle the workload with (including all of those in the second photo)

🔵 The toll these jobs take on the person holding them

🔵 How (if at all) to compartmentalize the subject matter when you’re constantly working on sensitive, human-centered matters

🔵 What it is like to work for a Governor who genuinely cares about mental health

Thank you to Jihoon for coming on, and to him and all of those in these types of roles in government for their public service.

I’m also just very honored to continue to guest host some episodes of the show while @poozer87 is on leave. I hope I am doing it justice in focusing on important topics in state government.

Today carries THREE powerful meanings.

💙 It is National Daughters Day.
💙 It is the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.
💙 And eight years ago today, H.Con.Res. 72 passed the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously — declaring that child safety should come FIRST in custody and visitation cases. Kyra was integral to its passage.

Kyra Franchetti was only two when New York Family Court failed to protect her. Since then, at least 46 New York children have been murdered by a parent or caregiver in custody, visitation and divorce-related cases.

To honor Kyra today, let’s look at what we have accomplished in Kyra’s memory:

Congress heard us.

New York’s Legislature heard us, unanimously passing Kyra’s Law (A.6194C/S.5998C) AND unanimously passing a measure to standardize forensic child custody evaluators (which is now NY law).

Survivors, children, experts, advocates, law enforcement and prosecutors have spoken in support of Kyra’s Law.

And Champions, YOU have gotten LOUD.

Yet Kyra’s Law remains unsigned by @govkathyhochul

Today, as we remember the children taken too soon, and celebrate the daughters we love — whether we hold them in our arms or in our hearts — let’s get LOUD for the children we can still protect.

Governor @kathyhochulny , what are you waiting for? Please prioritize the lives and safety of New York’s children and sign Kyra’s Law!

Here’s how you can help:

For the 46. 💙
For the next child. 💙

100 DAYS since the New York Legislature UNANIMOUSLY passed Kyra’s Law.

Let’s talk numbers....

60–0 — Senate vote.

131–0 — Assembly vote.

3 — Op-eds from respected legal and domestic violence experts making the case for Kyra’s Law.

7th — The grade Kyra would have entered.

10 YEARS — since New York Family Court failed to protect 2 year old Kyra Franchetti and she was murdered by her abusive father.

5 — New York children murdered since Kyra’s Law passed.

And after all of that:
0 — ACTION FROM @govkathyhochul

And while Governor @kathyhochulny waits to act, abusers are NOT waiting.

Children continue to be court-ordered into dangerous situations, exposed to abuse and failed by a Family Court system entrusted with protecting them.

And during this time, we have NOT been quiet.

Legal experts have spoken.
Domestic violence leaders have spoken.
Child advocates have spoken.
Law enforcement and prosecutors have spoken.
Survivors have spoken.
Children failed by NY family court have spoken.
The media has spoken.
Champions, YOU have spoken...ALL calling on Governor Hochul to sign Kyra’s Law.

Yet here we are.

DAY 100.

So Champions, NOW WE NEED YOU AGAIN.

If you called before, call again.
If you emailed before, email again.
If you shared our posts before, share again.

Governor Hochul needs to hear from us again — because 100 days is long enough, and New York’s children cannot wait.

📞 CALL: 518-474-8390
📧 NYers email the Governor here: https://www.kyraschampions.org/kyraslaw?utm_source=chatgpt.com#/18/
📝 Outside NY contact Governor Hochul here: https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form

Tell the Governor:
“100 days is long enough. Prioritize New York children. Sign Kyra’s Law.”

Governor Hochul, where is the urgency?
Where is the action?
When will you sign Kyra’s Law?

Champions, get LOUD.💙
For Kyra.💙
For the next child we can still protect.💙

I joined @capitolpressroom @poozer87 a few days ago to discuss the letter I led with @nysenatorrivera and 72 other elected officials urging the Department of Financial Services to reject or substantially reduce the excessive health insurance premium increases proposed for 2027.

TODAY we had a victory! The NYS Department of Finance Services announced that it largely rejected the proposed increases from the insurance companies with only a weighted average of 6% increase as opposed to the 20.6% weighted increase the insurance companies proposed.

See final rate approvals here:
myportal.dfs.ny.gov/fr/web/prior-approval/ind-and-sg-medical/summary-of-2027-requested-rate-actions

New Yorkers deserve affordable health care, and I’ll keep pushing to make sure insurance companies are held accountable—not allowed to put profits ahead of patients—until we pass the New York Health Act.✊🏽

If you’ve ever wanted to hear someone get genuinely excited about the legislative process, today’s your day.

I talked with @capitolpressroom about my time in Albany — all the inside baseball, the wins, the losses, and why I’m still somehow optimistic.

Ten years ago, I was planning Kyra’s funeral.

Ten years ago, I stood completely alone.
No political connections.
No organization.

Just a promise to my Sweet Baby Girl that her story would be told to help protect the next child.

Today, I will stand beside a District Attorney, children whose lives have been forever changed by New York Family Court, top domestic violence organizations, legal experts, students, and thousands of Kyra’s Champions.

Today we will honor 10 years without Kyra, and the movement that is now her legacy.

And today, we are just one signature away.

Join us live at 10:00 a.m. ET on Kyra’s Champions Facebook page for our press conference as we come together to ask @govkathyhochul to sign Kyra’s Law NOW!

Will you please help me?

Here is what you can do today:
☎️ Call Governor Hochul’s Office: 518-474-8390
📧 NEW YORKERS: CLICK HERE to email Governor Hochul - https://www.kyraschampions.org/kyraslaw#/18/

Champions, you’ve been amplifying Kyra’s voice for 10 years. You’ve showed up for rallies, sent emails, commented on posts, donated to support our movement, and shared her story.

Today, let’s speak up one more time.

💗 For Kyra.
💗 For the child whose life can be still be saved.

With tears and in solidarity,
Jacqueline
