In the latest episode of Caplin News, a student-produced news program by Florida International University ( @fiuinstagram ) students, the focus turns to Washington’s increasingly assertive foreign policy toward Cuba and Venezuela.

Following reports of a Florida arrest warrant for former Cuban President Raúl Castro and recent U.S. actions against Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, questions are emerging about the Trump administration’s broader strategy in Latin America.

At an FIU-hosted discussion in Washington, D.C., foreign policy experts examined the implications for U.S. national security, international trade and diplomatic relations across the Americas.

Carrie Filipetti, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cuba and Venezuela, described the administration’s approach as part of a wider campaign to increase pressure on both governments. The discussion also examined the limits of American power abroad and the potential consequences for regional stability.

🥤 Mexico’s soda tax is hitting shoppers at the register

At this corner store in Tulum, a 600 ml bottle of Coca-Cola sells for 24.50 pesos. The price went up when the tax took effect, and again in August.

In January, Mexico nearly doubled its tax on sugary drinks to about 3 pesos per liter. On Aug. 4, Coca-Cola raised prices again at grocery and convenience stores, following the tax increase.

The government calls it a “healthy tax,” aimed at reducing consumption of drinks linked to obesity and diabetes. President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the measure isn’t about raising revenue and that sugary soda consumption has dropped. Still, in its first seven months the tax brought in more than 40 billion pesos, roughly 2 billion dollars.

Mexico’s 2027 revenue law has passed the Chamber of Deputies and now heads to the Senate. Some lawmakers floated a similar tax on high-sodium foods like instant soup, but it wasn’t included in the package now before the Senate.
