In part one of a two-part episode, Frank is joined by filmmaker ALAN BERNSTEIN ("When We Went MAD!") and longtime Senior Editor JOE RAIOLA for a loving look at the subversive humor magazine's 73-year history, its eccentric co-founders, its transition from comic book to "slick" magazine, and its influence on future generations of comedians and comedy writers. Also in this episode: William M. Gaines takes on Congress, Al Feldstein gives Alfred E. Neuman an identity, Hugh Hefner gives Harvey Kurtzman "an unlimited budget" and the boys praise several members of the "Usual Gang of Idiots," including Max Brandel, Dick DeBartolo, Frank Jacobs, Arnie Kogen (and others). PLUS: "A Hard Day's Night"! Gilbert commandeers a limo! Irving Berlin goes to court! Joe goes to Oktoberfest! And Frank recalls the "glory days" of Mad competitors Sick, Cracked, Crazy and Help!

Awesome Q&A after the Midwest premiere of ‘When We Went MAD - The Unauthorized Story of MAD Magazine’ with some great stories from Sam Viviano - fine illustration and caricatures for over four decades as well as the art director with MAD Magazine for 19 years. What a rich life!

Out with the #RoyalStarrFilmFestival crew and Straight from the red carpet of When We Went MAD! The Unauthorized Story of MAD Magazine Premiere at the Redford Theatre, here’s me flanked by none other than Spy vs. Spy! 🕵️‍♂️🕵️‍♂️ (Yes, I somehow survived without becoming their latest victim… barely.)

This MAD masterpiece of a film celebrates the chaotic brilliance of MAD Magazine, and it’s already got me asking, What, Me Worry? Catch the premiere, meet the spies, and experience the unauthorized story of the magazine that made us all snort milk out of our noses.

(Disclaimer: No spies were harmed in the making of this post… yet.)”

What do you think — are you MAD enough for the moment?

While working a day job in broadcast television production covering Detroit’s professional sports teams, Alan Bernstein felt drawn to telling the story behind the satirical @mad.magazine because of the impact the subject had on his life. “['Mad'] grabbed me early on and it refused to loosen its grip,” Bernstein says about the genesis of his new feature documentary 'When We Went Mad: The Unauthorized History of Mad Magazine,' which is set for a local premiere in Detroit.

Starting the effort out of his own pocket with little crew or equipment, Bernstein would find nights, weekends, and years of his life dedicated to this personal passion of a production which he launched in 2008 for one simple reason — no one else had done it yet.

“I kept waiting for someone better than me to come along and make a documentary on Mad, which I always thought was very worthy of being told since it is such an American icon,” he says. “I kept reading about Mad artists and writers who were passing away throughout the years, and it finally just got to the point where if it’s going to happen, I’m going to do it. And that was it. I’ll figure it out later.”

The film will have its local premiere this week at Detroit's historic Redford Theatre. See link in bio to learn more about the project.

Theatre Bizarre was amazing! I was whisked away to a “magical place” by a fairy right when we arrived, lots of dancing, a magic spell put worms in my hand, tricks and treats, and so much fun! For me, it was the best one yet! Hail Zombo!
