A fun and creative way to warm up both your body and your mind for competition, all while deepening your ball handling skills.

Motor learning research suggests that players learn and transfer skills more effectively when their attention is directed externally toward solving a task or reading the environment instead of consciously controlling every movement. As coaches, we can design practice environments that encourage this through constraints, competition, and decision making.

The goal isn’t to stop teaching technique. It’s to build technique until players no longer have to think about it.

Mastery happens when what once required conscious effort becomes automatic.

In order to play fast, you have to think steps ahead.

Reading closeouts and making quick decisions start before you catch the basketball. It’s a situation that happens countless times throughout a game, yet it’s often undertrained at every level.

The more consistently you make the right read, the more efficient you’ll become. Many turnovers and poor shot attempts aren’t caused by a lack of skill, they come from a lack of preparation before the ball ever reaches your hands.

The game rewards players who process early.

How effective can we be when holding our defender hostage?

Constraints:
• 3 dribble limit after using the ball screen
• No finishes in the restricted area
• Defender must go over the ball screen and start with their heels on the three point line

These constraints force the offense to play with patience, leverage, and angles to create quality looks from 8–12 feet, a part of the floor many players avoid, but one they’ll inevitably have to score from.

Defensively, how well can you navigate over a ball screen when you’re already starting at a disadvantage? Can you recover, contest, and still make the possession difficult?

1 on 1 is one of the best teaching environments because it develops both sides of the ball.

The ability to get two feet in the paint and give yourself the option to score or create for others is invaluable.

The three most efficient shots in basketball all stem from rim pressure: layups, free throws, and catch and shoot threes.

In these clips, I added a constraint that rewarded 2 points instead of 1 for finishes inside the restricted area. That incentive challenged Jonah and Tyler to consistently find ways to get deep into the paint and finish.

Sometimes it’s physicality. Sometimes it’s a change of pace. Sometimes it’s awkward footwork that throws off the defender’s timing. Every situation calls for a different solution.

The goal isn’t to teach one move, it’s to develop players who can solve problems.

How well can we create advantages when we don’t have the basketball?

In these clips, I created an environment where Tyler and Jonah had to be decisive and deceptive not just to create an advantage, but to maintain it.

Pin Down Actions: 2-dribble limit
Blind Relocation: 1-dribble limit

The dribble constraints force 0.5 decisions. Read it. Decide it. Execute it.

Less is more. Efficiency is king.
