Every session has one photo I always try to capture (easier said than done with the big dogs!)
For me it’s the “puppy dog eyes”. That photo that just captures your dog looking into your soul captured in a frozen moment in time. The one that says everything about how much they love you, without a single word (or woof) needed.
Most dog photography is about getting down into their world. This photo however captures the connection you share in each other’s world.
I’ve photographed a lot of dogs, and I can tell you: that look is real, it’s different for every single dog, and once you see it in a photo, you’ll never forget it. It’s the kind of thing that makes your heart do a little flip every time you walk past it on the wall.
That’s what I’m chasing at every session. Not just a nice photo - but the one that puts you right back in that moment, twenty years from now. Is there a photo from your dog’s life that does that for you - one that just stops you every time you see it? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

You think you’ll remember all of it. The way they run. The way they look back at you. But it goes so fast.

Fig season is over… but Notorious F.I.G. is making one last appearance next week. Don’t miss out. Back & better than ever, with Kill Devil Pecan Rum taking center stage. This cocktail highlights the soft spice and warmth of our house made, cardamom spiced local fig syrup, creating the perfect balance of rich pecan, ripe fig, and subtle spice. One last taste of fig season. One last appearance. You know you want it. 😉 #heybartender #rumcocktails #farmtoglass #speakeasy #heartofvirginia

I want to tell you about Fin.
Fin’s owner brought their mom along to the session - just to watch, just to be there for it. I wasn’t thinking much about it at the time. I was focused on Fin, on the light, on the moments.
But at the end of the day, one of my favorite frames from that entire session was of Fin’s owner’s mom.
That’s the thing about paying attention during these sessions. The best photo isn’t always the one you planned for. Sometimes it’s the person who showed up just to watch, caught in a completely unguarded moment because they forgot anyone was looking.
Senior sessions do that. They make space for the whole picture.
