Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and heard—in the water, on the boat, and at work. 🩵
We have heard reports of sexual abuse on other people’s expeditions and within the dive industry, and we want to help stop it. At One Ocean Diving, we stand against sexual abuse and have a zero-tolerance policy toward it.
We support women, their leadership in the diving industry, and their right to work and explore without harassment or pressure.
Before booking an expedition or accepting a contract, research the company and its leaders. Ask about qualifications, travel arrangements, how to raise concerns, and how you can leave if you feel unsafe. This is especially important on liveaboards and in remote locations where access to help may be limited.
You have the right to ask questions, set boundaries, and say no. If something feels wrong, seek support as soon as you safely can. If the person in charge is involved, look for another reporting contact or outside support.
If you have experienced harm, you deserve compassion. You do not owe anyone a public explanation or need the perfect words to ask for help.
Let’s ask companies across diving, travel, and marine conservation to take a clear stand against sexual harassment and abuse, wherever they operate.

Captain’s Curse!

Captaining today at @oneoceandiving, and what an amazing day on the water. Days like this make me wish I was getting in the water too. The next couple of mornings are looking incredible.

Today’s Advanced Tiger Program was outstanding, with FOUR different tiger sharks showing up!

@oceanramsey gave the briefing and led the dive, while @faithwfins and @seasta_g were our personal safety divers and photographers.

Meanwhile, @captiansharkbait and I got stuck with the captain’s curse… watching all the action from above while working on our tans. 😂🦈☀️

The one I got one before a true local came and wanted her home back for a while.

Recently, a big, beautiful tiger shark showed up while we were surfing. I saw her big fin and beautiful striped as she struck something. The part I keep thinking about is how we left the lineup. Most of us didn’t scream, we tried not to thrash, but we also didn’t pretend she wasn’t there. We stayed aware and got ourselves out of the water as quick as possible.

Was every decision we made exactly what a shark expert would recommend in that encounter? Maybe maybe not. More importantly asking, what did we do that wasn’t smart on our part, like surfing in really muddy water. Every encounter is different and I am still learning, but one thing has fundamentally changed in me.Seeing a shark no longer automatically becomes panic. That shift happened after diving with @oneoceandiving @captsharkbait were we had the privilege to be in the water with seven tiger sharks, learning about behavior, body language, roles in the ecosystem and the ocean we share with them.

I think this is one of our responsibilities as surfers. We spent thousands of hours in the ocean, we study swell, directions, wind, tied, reefs, currents, and waves, but how much do we learn about the animals who actually live there?

We are visitors, they are not. Education doesn’t mean abandoning caution, respect doesn’t mean, pretending there’s no risk. And awareness doesn’t require terror.

The more I learn, the more I realize that understanding the ocean means understanding all of the animals we were taught to fear. If sharks terrify you, I highly recommend learning about them from people who work with them in the water and know them biologically and scientifically . For me getting closer to the truth, didn’t make me less careful. It made me calmer more aware and far more respectful of who’s home I’m surfing in.

And truthfully, humans are far more terrifying than sharks, to me anyways. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to experience the beautiful truth! Thanks @surfline for the REWIND!

Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to get to know some truly incredible people who have dedicated their lives to changing the way we see—and protect—sharks! 🦈🌊

If I had to write a Yelp review for what they do—it would be 5 stars allllll day!!! ⭐️😂 The education, the safety, the respect for the sharks—and, of course—the experience!!!!!
Time & time again, I’ve watched guests step onto the boat feeling nervous—maybe even a little terrified 😂… and leave saying, “OMG, BEST EXPERIENCE EVERRRR!!”

And THAT’S the magic of responsible ecotourism! Give someone the chance to experience sharks up close, and suddenly the animal they were afraid of becomes something they want to protect! ✨🦈✨
