“Bears keep me humble. They help me to keep the world in perspective and to understand where I fit on the spectrum of life. We need to preserve the wilderness and its monarchs for ourselves, and for the dreams of children. We should fight for these things as if our life depended upon it, because it does.”

~Wayne Lynch

A weekend unexpected encounter for a family member that was kind enough to let me use their footage and photo to put visual context to the repeated messages and warnings currently being issued by Parks Canada regarding the reported sightings of bears on trails and in campgrounds and campsites right now as they run the race against time to build up their fat reserves before the arrival of winter. (Which actually made an early appearance in the Rocky Mountains this weekend surprising hikers along with tourists in Banff and Lake Louise.)

This was a classic case of a chance encounter, the kind Park’s is warning about. It involved a grizzly sow and her two sub adult cubs and it came suddenly and it came without warning.

As you can see, several hikers had gathered at a picnic table to give the bears their space and in the still photo at the end you can see how the cubs decided to check out a hikers tent.

Thankfully this incident didn’t result in the bears receiving any food rewards and the sow didn’t exhibit any aggression but that said, had there been food attractants, this could have played out much differently.

When we see the posts about bears frequenting hiking trails it doesn’t really bring the message home as to what those encounters can actually look like which I think is important, not to evoke fear but rather to educate and create a deeper and clearer respect for how things can change in an instant.

The number of hikers that happened to be in the area and that called out at the time this Mamma was passing through with her cubs, was no doubt a great deterrent as was the fact there were no food rewards to be had.

Always remember the mountains are a shared space with lots of variables from weather, to terrain and wildlife, all which can change in a blink of an eye.

Always stay aware, safe and prepared

“Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.”

~Oprah Winfrey

Standing in this space (one of my summer favourites) as ink-grey clouds laden with rain lazily floated above the jagged mountain peaks was truly a “pinch me” moment.
With a world filled with uncertainty, nothing brings me clarity and certainty more than moments like these. I find it interesting how nature’s silent language always seems to speak its loudest in these moments.

I hope the last days of August are filled for you, with moments just like these ❤️

Attempt #2 with the milky way. I still think there’s some room for improvement. Maybe I need to expose the shot for a little longer so that the stars are properly exposed before stacking my photos. Also, shooting with bulb mode for a brighter foreground resulted in some hot pixels showing up. It seems as though there’s no easy fix to get a nice astro shot.

I still have a lot to learn when it comes to astro photos. I’ve been shooting single exposures for all of my astro shots, but I’ve come to realize just how distracting the satellites are. The other issue I have with this photo is the noise in the foreground. Next time I’ll try to reduce the noise and distractions for this shot.
