My review: The author does a wonderful job of portraying the effects of cancer on a family. We follow the main character Hannah from adolescence to adulthood as she copes with her mother’s illness and subsequent death while worrying about her future. With realistic, flawed characters, especially the main character, Cara Bertoia dives deep into the psychological distress some people endure worrying about potentially carrying deadly genes.

This week Hadley and I are posting about a mystery/suspense novel by Cara Bertoia called Casino Queen.

Description: Caroline Popov, alone, heartbroken, and deeply in debt ends up in glamorous Palm Springs, California where Native casinos have just opened, offering employment to thousands. She lands a job at the Palm Oasis Casino where she is mentored by the charismatic tribal chairman, John Tovar. In the process of rediscovering her inner strength, she learns, you have to gamble like your life depends on it. Because it often does.

What a unique and suspenseful tale! With all the suspense/mystery books flooding the market on a regular basis, it's so fun to find one that teaches you something and offers a new experience to the reader. I loved being immersed in the behind-the-scenes world of casinos alongside Caroline Popov. It was so easy to identify with Caroline's struggles and to admire her tenacity in walking into a new management role and trying her best to run it well while navigating such an interesting cast of characters working alongside her.

Jennifer Ivy Walker has outdone herself. This is one of the best books I’ve read all year. My mind is blown. I devoured this book in less than a day because I just couldn't stop reading. I loved the first book in the series, The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven. And I'm happy to say this book is even better! Nonstop action, romance, and suspense from the first page to the last. If you read historical, fantasy, or paranormal romance then you need to read this series. The third book is coming next month.
