Cringe presents… ASK AN EXPERT #19: Michael Meredith @mmeredith27, owner and executive chef of @mrmorrisnz and @metita.akl

Mr Morris is a restaurant for a special occasion, the service and food delivered with a fine-dining precision, despite a less formal setting (it safely sits in that elusive “smart” category). Its attention to the finer things in life makes sense when you find out its owner and head chef is Michael Meredith, who you might know from being the founding head chef at The Grove and, of course, his own restaurant Merediths. We’re big fans of the food at both Mr Morris and Michael’s more Pacific-focused restaurant, Metita - especially the flavour-packed snacks.

INTRODUCING “BEHIND THE BAR”

At this year’s 1919 Cocktail Competition at @hiso_rooftopbar we announced something we’ve wanted to do for a long time “Behind the Bar”.

1919 has been built with the support of New Zealand hospitality.

Over the years, incredible venues and most importantly the people behind them have backed us, poured our spirits and helped us grow. Without that support, Behind the Bar simply wouldn’t be possible.

So we want to start giving something back.

From every litre of 1919 Gin & Vodka sold starting from September 2026, 10 cents will go into a dedicated Behind the Bar fund, created to support people working at venues that stock and pour 1919.

Initially, the fund will focus on helping with medical and counseling costs, when someone needs a bit of extra support.

As the fund grows, we want its support to grow too including helping hospitality workers up-skill, develop and further their careers in the industry.

We wouldn’t be in a position to do this without the support of venues like @caretaker.nz , @rocketman.nz , @lilian.akl , @curiobarnz , @thechurchillakl @mos_bar_auckland @ahirestaurant and so many more that have backed 1919 over the years.

Every bottle poured has helped us get here.

Now, we want some of that support to flow back Behind the Bar.
