For generations, Marikina has been synonymous with Filipino shoemaking, a legacy built on craftsmanship, skilled hands, and an industry that once employed thousands across the city.

Today, a new generation of Filipino designers is returning to the last, the leather, and the artisans who built Marikina’s name in the first place. For @alexie_studiodarte founder Angelie Alexie Nethercott and @carinosa.ph founders Nina Magbanua and Rosanna Periquet, making shoes in Marikina means embracing small-batch production, locally sourced materials, and the knowledge passed down through generations of makers. Their approach may be smaller in scale, but it carries a renewed sense of intention: one that sees the handmade not as a relic of the past, but as a craft worth preserving, evolving, and building upon.
