The Center for Research on English-speaking Worlds (CREW) at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle and the Center for Black Visual Culture (CBVC) at New York University are delighted to host the event "French-American Artistic Conversations", featuring photographer Carla Williams at the Sorbonne.

The conversation will bring together Carla Williams with Dejha Carrington (NYU), Amandine Nana (Palais de Tokyo), Deborah Willis (NYU), Clémentine Tholas (USN), and Laurence Cossu-Beaumont (USN).

French-American Artistic Conversations is a research collaboration between two institutions deeply engaged with culture and the arts and committed to developing a shared reflection on Black and diasporic visual arts, as well as on the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The project builds on a series of encounters with artists organized at the Sorbonne by the CREW research team since 2024. The new edition continues this initiative while opening research activities more broadly to students at all levels and to the general public, as part of a commitment to open research and public engagement.

The event will take place on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 5.00 p.m. in the Amphithéâtre Liard at the Sorbonne (17 rue de la Sorbonne, 75005 Paris). It will be followed by a reception, offering members of the audience an opportunity to continue the conversation with the speakers in a more informal setting.

The event is free and open to all, but registration is required at the link in our bio. If you cannot attend in person, the conversation will also be livestreamed on Université Sorbonne Nouvelle’s YouTube channel.

Graces Mews presents What Rose from the Cut, a group show exploring feminist strategies of collage. @gracesmews   Developed collectively between Graces Mews, curator Fiona Rogers, artist Justine Kurland, and collaborator and collector Sarah Miller Meigs, the exhibition reﬂects the gallery’s interest in photographic process and the circulation and interpretation of images. @firecracker_foto @justinekurland_studio @millermeigs   The exhibition brings together two signiﬁcant bodies of research: Fiona Rogers’ publication Cut Out: A Feminist History of Photo Collage, Montage and Assemblage (Thames & Hudson and V&A, 2026) which traces the previously untold relationship between photography, feminist art and collage, from the 19th century to the present day; and Justine Kurland and Sarah Miller Meigs’ exhibition and publication The Rose (lumber room, 2025), which expands this history of collage through ideas of circular genealogy and kinship formed through association. What Rose from the Cut features international artists whose approach to collage amplifies and contextualise one another, forming a constellation that extends our collective vision of social, political and spiritual possibilities.

Collage has long been a feminist strategy: a way to disrupt; to salvage, reuse and repair everyday objects; to patch together a liveable world. Cunts with a kitchen knife, these foremothers cut and stuck their way out of dominant narratives, making room for histories that had been foreclosed and futures yet to be imagined.

We are delighted to share the first issue of September, an artist-run annual print publication bringing together conceptual photography, cinema, architecture, philosophy, fiction and nonfiction, video art, and artist books, all devoted to a single subject.

Our first issue, ‘Map of Maps’, gathers nearly sixty artists and writers, including thirty newly commissioned texts, around the theme of archives. Thank you to every single contributor. This magazine is brimming to the seams with your insightful, provocative, touching, and surprising interpretations.

Across the issue, these responses take many forms and directions. Among them, Keisha Scarville’s intimate portraits of her father’s passport photographs—collaged, painted over, and repurposed to explore identity and belonging; Jeffrey Gibson’s intervention in the Brooklyn Museum’s archive, where he places moccasins on a colonial statue; and Bernardo Mosquera’s curatorial and critical essay considering the archive through a Brazilian Candomblé perspective, in which past, present, and future happen at once, moving away from dominant Western forms of linear time and considering how this shapes archiving in both personal and institutional realms.

These are just a few of the many perspectives gathered in ‘Map of Maps.’ Check out the first issue for the work of all of our contributors, which we are deeply grateful to have had the honor to publish.

‘Map of Maps’ is the product of sixteen months of hard work. September is a true labor of love and obsessiveness, something at the root of the archival impulse in all of us.

For the past several months, I’ve been digitizing a massive forgotten archive of my grandfather’s slides from the 50’s to the late 70’s. It was kismet that one of my course offerings this summer was “Reimagining The Family Archive” with Carla Williams. With a growing love of Risograph printing, I really enjoyed playing with the tonality and also reconstructing some of the images to reflect the memories I was not present for. I made this book with the anticipation of gifting it to my grandpa for his 90th and I hope to continue working on it as this collection is rich with tenderness and complexity 🥹
