The physical exhibition has closed, but the conversation continues.

Recorded live on October 22, 2026, this What’s Your Elephant™ Virtual Artist Talk brings together seven exhibiting artists from What We Carry: A Community Art Exhibition & Dialogue for a conversation about their creative practices, the work they brought into the exhibition, and some of what lives beneath what we first see.

Featured artists:
Carla Golembe
Carlisa McNee
DJ-Laoshi
Natalya Kochak
Zeb
Moisés Acebedo
Tony Brown

Together, the artists reflect on memory, identity, history, caregiving, spirituality, belonging, resilience, transformation, and the personal and collective experiences we carry into our creative work.

The conversation also looks beyond the gallery walls, asking what may be carried differently after the exhibition and how art can give us language for experiences that are sometimes difficult to name.

What We Carry brought together 35 artists exploring what we inherit, what sustains us, what we survive, and what we are learning to carry differently.

What a beautiful morning. 💛🎨

Today’s 2026 Art of Breastfeeding Brunch & Exhibition brought together art, families, community, conversation, food, little ones running around, and so much warmth.

I was honored to return for a second year to support BreastfeedMIAMI as curator, helping bring together this year’s exhibition and the stories behind the work. We featured 18 artists and 25 exhibition entries, with many artists creating new work specifically for this year’s call.

One of my favorite parts of the day was moderating a short artist conversation and hearing directly from the artists about the lived experiences, ideas, health issues, family connections, and moments of tenderness behind their work. And it was especially good to have so many of our exhibiting artists there with us today.

Congratulations to our People’s Choice Award recipients:

🥇 Joanne Hampstead — Safronia
🥈 Alana Rae Shir — Deep Blue Love
🥉 Joselyn Sira — The Whole World in Your Arms

And much love to every participating artist whose work helped tell this year’s story. There were so many beautiful, thoughtful and very different interpretations of breastfeeding, support, family and community.

Thank you to BreastfeedMIAMI for inviting me back, and to everyone who came out, shared space, asked questions, met the artists, voted, ate, laughed and spent part of their Saturday with us.

Art. Community. Families. Stories. 💛

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, the DJ played this version of Magalenha and it was exactly the energy. 🇧🇷✨

“The exhibit, the performers, the entire space and vibe made me feel held.”

That reflection from a What We Carry attendee has stayed with me.

This exhibition was created to make room for what we carry, individually and collectively, and for the conversations, memories, emotions, questions, and connections that can emerge when we encounter one another through art.

Opening night may be over, but What We Carry is still unfolding.

The exhibition remains on view through September 10, with more opportunities to gather, create, reflect, move, and connect along the way.

🥁 Aug. 30: Community Drum Workshop with FeminAfrika
✂️ Sept. 5: WYE Collage-Making Workshop + Community Chat / Artist Conversation
✨ Sept. 10: Closing Reflection: Art, Movement & Community

Come experience the work for yourself.

You’re invited to What We Carry.

On Friday, August 21, we open the doors to What We Carry: A Community Art Exhibition & Dialogue at 1310 Gallery in Fort Lauderdale.

This exhibition brings together 35 exhibiting artists whose work moves through memory, identity, grief, ancestry, healing, belonging, resistance, joy, survival, care, and the many things we carry quietly, visibly, personally, and collectively.

What We Carry asks us to spend a little time with what lives beneath the surface.

What have we inherited?
What has helped sustain us?
What are we ready to release?
What are we learning to carry differently?

The opening night is a chance to experience the work, meet artists, gather in community, listen, reflect, and be in the space together.

“The Queen of Joy represents divine balance and alignment—the harmonious integration of the four suits and the embodiment of commitment to self-healing, self-love, and self-mastery.

Rooted in creative expression, gratitude, and inner radiance, she reminds us that JOY is not merely an emotion, but a way of being.”

This piece was such a joy to create, and while I was working on it, several exciting ideas came through for future offerings. 🤸🏾‍♀️☀️🔥

So tell me, Queens… which one resonates most? 👑💫 Would you rather...

🔥 Have me create a commissioned solar art piece for you, using a picture of your choosing - that celebrates your essence, energy, and personal symbolism?

OR

🎨 Create your own smaller, painted version in a fun, creative, and empowering experience (virtual/ in person)?

Excited to hear which one you’d prefer?.. and what would be the title of your card? What are you the Queen of? 👑😍👀

There’s something that happens when people are given space…
real space… to slow down, create, and just be.

You start to see it in the room—
in the focus,
in the laughter,
in the quiet moments in between.

And then you feel it.

This isn’t just about making a mask.
It’s about expression.
Connection.
Presence.

Every piece created carries something personal—
a story, a release, a reflection.

And every time, I’m reminded why this work matters.

If you’ve been craving space like this…
you’re not alone.

Shoutout to the folks like @bringthepretty & @creditdr.joma of @_thecreditgroup , who donated tickets so others could be in the room. Also, to @islandcitystage for hosting us. This is what community looks like. 💛
