Saturday, March 28. Tigertail Road, Crestwood Hills. Peter Galliaert opened his Richard Neutra for a sunset drink on the occasion of the Walker Guest House showing at the PDC this weekend. A Donald Judd on the wall, the Pacific at the end of every sightline, and a room full of people that @nicolereber and @carlyepacker put together carefully. The light did the rest.

LA Art Week arrived with its share of chaos this year. Vast flight cancellations during east coast storms sent the art world scrambling—but once on the ground in the California sunshine, the mood brightened enormously.

For APAA member Cris McCall (@mccallartadvisory), @FelixArtFair was its usual buoyant, delightful self. New discoveries included Cohju Gallery from Kyoto showing Shu Okamoto’s paintings, and Gallery Playlist from Busan with whimsical sold-out sculptures by Jisook Jung. Carlye Packer’s “Hollywood Noir” presentation was exceptional, as were woven works by Porfirio Gutiérrez at Volume Gallery and Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson at Andrew Rafacz.

@Post_Fair impressed with its manageable scale and high quality—highlights included Łukasz Stokłosa’s painted museum interiors at Tureen, Dallas, and George Sherman’s ceramics at Marta Gallery. The new @ENZO.LosAngeles Fair in Silverlake was a welcome addition, with Sara’s presentation of Ann Slavit’s photography standing out as “another overlooked non-male artist who deserves our attention.”

Sara Lee Hantman’s Sea View Gallery in Hollywood was a must-visit, where works by Zenobia Lee—showing there and at @FriezeOfficial—felt like seeing “a superstar in the making.” The week’s most moving moment: Superpositions’ presentation of Greg Ito’s installation at Frieze—trunks fabricated from the luggage his grandparents carried when incarcerated at a Wyoming internment camp during WWII. “Super relevant work by an artist whose heart is as huge as his talent.”

Inside @thehollywoodroosevelt, @felixartfair replaces booths with actual rooms.

LA’s layered crowds move from one room to the next in seconds. Many presentations echo past references. Less textile this year, more ceramics… and, as always, painting. Beneath the atmosphere, the market quietly asserts itself: in turbulent times, galleries need to sell.

My highlight: slipping into the curated bathrooms 👇🏽
