Carly Greer - “Being Poor”

If money can’t buy happiness, Carly Greer just handed us three-and-a-half minutes of water-tight evidence. Her latest single, “Being Poor,” is a radiant slice of Appalachian joy that reminds us there are fortunes you simply cannot deposit in a bank. Packed with warmth, wit, and enough bluegrass spirit to make your front porch feel a little wider, it’s a song that finds riches in scraped knees, dirt roads, and childhood memories instead of dollar signs. Rather than wallowing in nostalgia, Carly celebrates it with a grin that’s impossible not to return. The lyrics are clever without trying too hard, balancing laugh-out-loud observations with genuine heart, and the central hook about there being “a lot of wealth in being poor” lands as both a memorable turn of phrase and the song’s emotional compass. Musically, this is bluegrass through and through. Banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and upright bass weave together with infectious energy, and the complete absence of traditional percussion never leaves the arrangement feeling empty. If anything, it makes every string pluck and bow stroke feel that much livelier. The whole track bounces along with the confidence of musicians who know exactly when to show off and when to let the song breathe. Carly’s vocal performance ties everything together beautifully. There’s a joyful power in her delivery that occasionally recalls Natalie Maines at her very best, full of personality and effortless charisma. When the three-part harmonies bloom in the chorus, the song somehow gets even brighter, lifting an already sunny performance into something genuinely exhilarating. “Being Poor” isn’t interested in romanticizing hardship so much as celebrating the people and places that shaped us before life became complicated. In an age when everyone seems obsessed with chasing more, Carly makes a convincing case that sometimes the biggest payoff comes from remembering what you already had. Turns out the richest thing in your wallet might just be a memory.
