What an honor it was to moderate a discussion about music and its extraordinary power to heal with world-renowned soprano Renee Fleming and three members of the UNC School of Medicine Faculty: Dr. Flavio Frohlich, Dr. Laura Hanson, and Dr. Patrick Smith.

With Fleming’s groundbreaking book Music and Mind as the springboard, Fleming and UNC neuroscientists and practitioners explored how the arts are informing cutting-edge developments and reshaping clinical practice.

Many thanks to @carolinaperformingarts for bringing us all together, and for hosting such a meaningful forum at UNC’s Memorial Hall.

What do a goldfish-driving car, a robot guide dog, and a glove designed to improve swimming performance have in common?

They're just a few of the projects coming out of the Experimental Engineering Lab (EEL) at Carolina. Come see them for yourself as part of #UNCResearchWeek!

📅 Friday, October 23
🕚 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
📍 Sitterson Hall & Brooks Building

Housed within the UNC Department of Computer Science, EEL brings together computing and hands-on engineering. Students and researchers use the lab's machine shops, electronics fabrication facilities, rapid prototyping tools, wet labs, and testing environments to build everything from robotics and virtual reality experiences to health technologies and environmental monitoring systems.

In partnership with Carolina Performing Arts’ upcoming All. Together. Now. festival (February 19–21), EEL is opening its doors to the public. Join us for an open house featuring 10+ demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to meet the students and researchers behind some of Carolina's most creative and unexpected projects.

Great leaders know how to unite opposites around a shared goal.

Alison shares a story about helping Nick improve his basketball performance through ballet, and how that lesson shaped her approach to leadership. By understanding the differences between athletes and artists, she’s been able to bridge the gap and show how much they actually have in common.

@alisonmfriedman from @carolinaperformingarts is an international performing arts executive, artistic director, and producer with experience across Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia.

Episode 8 of Hunk Talking Junk is available on all major podcast platforms.

The Carolina Bluegrass Band’s time in Dublin is off to a phenomenal start! The band performed at the Royal Irish Music Academy today with Rhiannon Giddens on banjo and Justin Harrington on bones. This performance came at the end of the symposium “Songlines: Memory, Reclamation, and Repair in Ireland and the American South,” at which Giddens was the plenary speaker. The performance was impromptu, and after a short run-through of the chords, they launched into “Lights in the Valley,” with Giddens encouraging the crowd to sing the refrains.

Stay tuned for more glimpses into the incredible Irish excursion the Carolina Bluegrass Band and Marching Tar Heels are having in Dublin this week!
