🌻🐐🌻Waverly shares why this is a good bench waiting for the bus @lawrencestreetplaza 🆕 to this account or East Rock / Goatville neighborhood? this triangle plaza was not the safest or most welcoming place just three years ago. There was only 1 bench inside the park. Locals have shared that this was intentional. in 70s this was an area known for drug use and reselling stolen goods. Removing benches and making it a dog park was partly to discourage this use. More recently, we observed that any bench had to be chained up or immovable on Upper State Street. When the city cut down this sycamore, we saw an opportunity to create a bench with this old slab of red oak and a couple salvaged cinder blocks. Red Oak is not the greatest for outdoor use but it has held up pretty well with a sanding and fresh coat of paint every year. 🌻👀🌻Oh, if you’re sad about summer being over, there is one @americanmeadows Henry Wilde sunflower 🌻 blooming now very late to the party!!! Near @eastrockporchfest planters. The lemon queen sunflower 🌻 exceeded expectations in the other empty tree bed. I view wildflowers and annuals as pioneers. When I see fresh soil from curb work with just grass seeds, I just can’t help myself. We may request street trees from @urbanresources but for now, we’re building mini ecosystems and amending soil with salvaged plants, seeds, and random bags of compost and coffee grounds from @sprucecoffeenhv Very💰low cost ✅ DIY and almost never watered except to get them to germinate. We are considering adding another bench on State and Edwards bus stop with @ct_urbanists @maria3sforward9 @carolinetanbee @tara_gian_ @rishabh.mittal7 @susan.h.frew.7 @downtowndoug @corsairapartments @ralphwalkericerink @dougcoffin Wanna get involved? New Haven Craft Club is officially open.

Thank you to everyone who came out last night and made our grand opening so incredibly special. Seeing the studio full of people laughing, connecting, celebrating, and adding their own little piece to our community painting was honestly a little surreal. We dreamed about this room being full of life, and you made it happen.

We are beyond excited for this weekend, can’t believe it’s almost here! East Rock Porchfest begins at 11:00 AM and goes until 5:00 PM with a final collaborative event @lawrencestreetplaza from 5:00 - 6:30 PM. The energy in that room was unmatched. 🏀🔥

This is what happens when community shows up for community. On August 21st, ConnCORP teamed up with SNEABJ and the YMCA to host our Back to School High School Basketball Tournament, and New Haven brought it. For a few hours, that gym was more than a court, it was a safe haven. A place where kids could just be kids, where parents could relax and cheer, and where the whole neighborhood came together under one roof.

Players gave us 5-on-5 competition that had everyone on their feet, parents and supporters filled the sidelines with love and noise, and every player who came through left with a backpack and school supplies to start the year off right.

Add in pizza, music, and prizes for the winners, and you've got a night that reminded us why this work matters. Creating safe spaces for our young people isn't just a nice idea, it's the mission.

A huge thank you to our partners @sneabj and the @cccymca for making this night possible, and to every player, parent, and neighbor who came out to hoop, watch, or just be part of it. Thank you @rreasrussell for stopping by and suporting! See you next time.

A HUGE and heartfelt thank you to Planet Fitness, and especially Jessenia Rojas, for reaching out to us, putting this incredible Back-to-School Supply Drive together, and rallying Planet Fitness locations and members to support our PAL families.

Just look at these photos. ❤️

Backpacks, notebooks, folders, crayons, markers, pencils and SO many other school supplies, all donated by people who simply wanted to help make sure children in our community have what they need to start the school year feeling prepared and excited.

What may seem like a backpack, a box of crayons or a few notebooks to one person can mean so much more to a family trying to get their children ready for school. Every single donation matters!

Jessenia, thank you for believing in what New Haven PAL is doing and for taking an idea and turning it into something far bigger than we ever could have imagined. And to every Planet Fitness member who purchased an item and dropped it into one of those donation boxes,THANK YOU!!! You may never meet the child who receives it, but please know that you made a difference in that child’s life. ❤️
