One-minute charcoal destructive repetition drawings
Close friends and family as the subjects

One continuous line
Then wipe it away and start again
No hiding behind rendering skill

Last year I learned a simple but brutal exercise from my mentor @watiewhite doing continuous line contour drawings in 60-second bursts. There's no lifting the charcoal, no fixing, no saving; just looking, moving, responding. Then smudge and wipe the entire piece of paper off and start again.

Wiping the charcoal away forces detachment from the work. No preciousness, no polishing, no ego. The value lives solely in the act, not the art or work when it's done. There’s no time to make it pretty, only time to make it honest.

It’s a reminder that art isn’t always about what survives — sometimes it’s about what it trains inside you: perception, instinct, and trust in your hand.

://2025
“Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.”

2025 has been a year of learning, growth, pushing through so many obstacles, sweat, dancing, late nights with friends and at the studio, missing so many holidays including my favorite Halloween..and yet… this is the first year of my life where every sacrifice felt like an act of love..not just some ego, hustle-culture nonsense... but a genuine devotion to the work and to the people who stand inside it with me. From pop ups, to late nights projection mapping, to long days in the studio learning and pushing through to get out of debt...none of it would have been possible without the bright, amazing humans around me.

We live in a world that often measures success by what you sell, who you know, or how far you get ahead. But this past year... reflecting on my work and more importantly the amazing people I've met has reminded me that being surrounded by people who believe... who show up with genuine energy, curiosity, and care...that’s the real wealth. It really has helped me discover a version of myself i didn't know existed before.

Here’s to all the people who became part of the wild, passion filled art world I'm building.
Here’s to the community that’s been growing around us.
Here’s to the work that demanded a lot... but gave me more.
And here’s to the humans who made the year worth living.

Thank you.
Truly.

Elijah Carson has made his mark.

The @kearney_high graduate has spent the past four years creating his own path with @unkartdesign

With every brushstroke and sketch he has harnessed his creative ability, found his style, and created some incredible works of art.

Congratulations to Elijah and to all of our Studio Art Seniors as they embark on their careers after UNK!

UNK students won multiple awards, including best of show, during a statewide competition hosted by @aafnebraska.

The annual Nebraska American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) recognize creative excellence in the art of advertising, with separate divisions for professionals and college students.

🥇Elijah Carson, Rilynn Lutt, Abigail Heins and Ely Wise earned gold awards for their work, and Elijah also won 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖. Gold awards recognize the “highest level of creative excellence.”

🥈Tia Broadwell and Sydney Weiler both received silver awards recognizing outstanding entries.

UNK’s gold and silver award winners advance to a district competition, where they’ll have a chance to reach the national level.
