Closed chain shoulder work can be a super valuable tool for any shoulder rehab, especially for throwers and overhead athletes.

These athletes operate primarily in open chain positions, so giving the shoulder a challenging closed chain stimulus can expose them to something they aren’t used to.

I also think closed chain work can be a safe place to start loading the shoulder before progressing into more demanding open chain positions.

There’s a lot we can explore from these positions by changing the direction, range, and amount of load.

Here are a few variations I’ve been using recently, depending on the athlete’s strength, experience, and symptoms.

Sneak peek at some of the work we’ve been doing with a college pitcher dealing with a non operative labrum tear.

Overhead athlete shoulder rehab has to be more than 3 sets of 30 banded ERs and a few “scap squeeze” exercises thrown together. It should be intentional and specific to the demands the shoulder will eventually need to tolerate when returning to throwing.

We’re focused on rebuilding strength, improving control, increasing capacity, and exposing the shoulder to progressively more challenging positions and demands throughout the process. The goal isn’t just getting out of pain. It’s preparing the athlete to return to throwing and competing with confidence.

Don’t settle for less.
