🎞️ DISTURBING DOMESTIC PEACE by @carst_horn⁣

“In Berlin, flats are being bought, refurbished and sold on as investment properties. Large profits are to be expected. Rents are rising and the tenant structure of entire neighbourhoods is changing. After the house I live in with my family was sold, I started photographing the building. My fascination with the patina of the surfaces quickly gave way to capturing the building’s transformation. Noise and dirt regularly permeate our daily lives. Tenants with long-term contracts have become a disruptive factor. My children are growing up with the feeling that their home is not safe.”⁣

Community Feature • Youth Issue Artist Showcase

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception at @gallery881_!

The print issue will be available to order soon. We had to delay the release due to Canada’s nationwide postal strike, which now seems resolved. We’re giving it a bit more time to ensure system backlogs are cleared before shipping, so your packages arrive safely.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to and supported the Youth Project—we couldn’t have done it without you! Stay tuned; the print issue looks incredible, and we can’t wait to share it! 🙌😊

CARSTEN HORN

1970, Germany
@carst_horn

My series combines images from two long-term projects.

I have been wandering through Berlin's urban landscape for years, documenting the rapid changes in the cityscape. Streets, houses and surfaces bear witness to rising rents and displacement, but also to social struggles. Expensive renovations and the sale of flats as investment properties are changing the structure of entire neighbourhoods. Social niches and alternative lifestyles are disappearing, as are old facades and open spaces. Resistance from the population usually goes unheard by politicians.

But how does it feel to be gentrified? After the house I live in with my family was sold, I started photographing the building. My fascination with the patina of the surfaces quickly gave way to documenting the transformation through renovation. Noise and dirt regularly permeate our daily lives. We, as tenants with long-term contracts, have become a disruptive factor, while our children grow up with the feeling that their home is not safe.
