BET ON ME 05/18/25

It’s very hard for me to put into words what this project means to me (heck it took me months to even make this post) so please bear with me!

Sometimes in my job, I become “numb” to all of the incredible stories unfolding right in front of my eyes because it’s “nothing new” to me. I knew Zakai Zeigler was a 3-star no name recruit who somehow wound up at Tennessee. I knew his family lost everything they owned when his mother’s building caught fire in NYC his freshman year. I knew he tore his ACL his sophomore year. I knew he took the team to the Elite 8 his junior year. And I knew he wanted to bring home Tennessee men’s basketball its first ever NCAA banner his senior year.

So you can imagine it was like a lightbulb moment back in January when I went to the mbb crew and said, “um we absolutely have to tell his story and I would like to lead this project”. Their response, “go for it”. So, I recruited the help of an eager long form storyteller student (Michael) and our men’s basketball videographer (Allie) and the “Dream Team” got to work.

We learned A LOT over the course of the next four months. Traveled all over town collecting interviews. Spent many late nights in the office editing. Poured over 500 hours into this project from start to finish. And wound up with a documentary on the most accomplished point guard in program history.

It was so much fun putting all the pieces of this story together, watching Michael bring all of the chapters to life, hearing Allie talk about the footage she shot with the project in mind, and seeing our “20-minute vision” turn into an “hour long documentary”.

Two things were really important for me as we got close to the release date:
1. Hosting a sneak preview for our coworkers and students in the basketball film room to celebrate our accomplishment.
2. Making sure that every single person who touched this film was included on the poster and in the credits.

This was a MASSIVE team effort and there are moments when I think back and say to myself, “I don’t even know how we pulled that off”. But we did. And I’m so proud of the group who put in the work to make it possible.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!
