Before this 1997 Recruiting Issue, all analysis of the top high school players was word of mouth. There was no place to see all the kids play. We made hundreds of calls, state by state, starting at the grassroots level. Once the regional lists of names were in place, we ran them past guys like Jake Reed, who was involved with recruiting camps and U-19 teams. College assistant coaches knew more than anyone. They knew all the kids, were always cool about not lobbying for their own guys or busting my chops about how players were categorized. They were always in surprising agreement on our groupings. Then again, we also weren’t grading their classes and rankings kids by actual number at the time. No glossy photo shoots. And “Young Guns” meant kids who were high school seniors. I got Vestal artist Pete Krein to spice up pages with his signature sketches. This is the most time consuming work lacrosse journalists do. The time commitment from Inside Lacrosse continues, and they do an amazing job covering this space to this day.

Shoutout to this group this past weekend and everyone else who balled with us this summer. Another good year with the squad and even though we didn’t take it home, we stuck with the champs and we always have the best time. Wouldn’t rather do it with anyone else Til next year and Jr Muskies this winter. #GoMuskies #BoxLacrosse #WisconsinLacrosse
