We're so proud that our social work intern Emily Van Dixhorn was recognized by the Carthage College Aspire Center as Non-Profit Intern of the Year! Emily has been involved in many of our programs, including Techquity, Readers are Leaders, Community Investment, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and more. She has worked to connect clients to key resources, support organizational operations, and advocate for community needs. As part of her internship and course work, Emily completed a literature review on the impacts of implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in higher education and social service settings. Through this research, she found a positive correlation between diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and student learning, staff feelings of well-being, and client satisfaction.

Emily has been an incredible part of our United Way team, and we couldn’t be more excited to see all that she will accomplish after graduation this May!

This J-term, some of our nursing students along with Dr. Thompson participated in the Norway Comparative Health Systems course. There they examined the healthcare system and policies of Norway! 🇳🇴 ❄️

“Learning about Norway’s healthcare system alongside the snowy fjords was my favorite part of the trip and an experience that helped move my nursing journey forward!” - Senior nursing student, Ava McClure

Say hello to #NASWWi summer intern Mariah Parker!
Hi everyone! My name is Mariah (after the Christmas diva herself). I am going into my senior year of my Bachelor’s degree at Carthage College for a self-designed major in social welfare, a degree that mixes social work with political science. I am incredibly passionate about equal and fair healthcare and autonomy rights for all people, regardless of their gender, sex, orientation, race, age, and other factors. Likewise, I have been an avid advocate for LGBTQIA+ youth and adults, as well as for safer gun laws and more diverse, less stigmatized approaches to mental health, as these topics are ones I hold close to me and are often intertwined while being heavily politicized to the detriment of all people involved. In my downtime, you can typically find me watching horror movies or reading various books (usually true crime, of course) and spending time with my family on various adventures.

The co-presidents and two members of Mi Gente attended Madison Action Day with Racine Interfaith Coalition, where they heard firsthand accounts on issues like driver’s licenses for all, BadgerCare expansion, and education funding. They then marched to the Capitol, calling for action, and met with elected officials to advocate for these policies.

Social Work Student Association and Mi Gente spent time at the capitol last week advocating for their values!
April 9, 2025: Twelve Carthage social work students attended NASW-WI Advocacy Day, learned about issues such as gun violence prevention, public service loan forgiveness programs, juvenile justice reform, and more. After attending the educational workshops, students met with elected officials and their staff to advocate for policies that impact social workers and the communities they serve.

You’re invited to the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s Mental Health Student Panel! It is EXTREMELY important to support our students and learn from them directly. Learn from Carthage students how we can support them in their mental health during this time of uncertainty. The panel is on May 2nd, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in TWC 128s. Food will be provided. The first hour consists of a student panel where the audience can ask questions and hear student’s stories. The second hour consists of de-stress activities hosted by our partnered organizations (Pi Theta, Social Work Student Association, Mental Health Awareness Club, and Mi Gente). We hope to see you there! Scan the QR code on the poster or copy and paste the following link to RSVP:

What happens when we make space for truth, care, and action—all in one day?

Last week, ENOUGH! joined Carthage College Theatre and Social Work to present Healing the Healers—a daylong event of panels, dialogue, and storytelling centered on gun violence and those most impacted by it. We heard powerful conversations from those on the front lines—doctors, nurses, advocates, survivors—who are doing the hard work of prevention, care, and healing.

I had the privilege of moderating our gun violence policy panel with Dr. Nina Agrawal, Dr. Halleh Akbarnia, Dr. Kellie Snooks, and Nick Matuszewski of WAVE—each bringing vital perspectives rooted in medical practice, law, and advocacy.

We ended the day with Terminal Exhale, a collaboration between @enoughplaysproject and Carthage, born from interviews with frontline healthcare workers who confront the aftermath of gun violence every day. The student cast honored these stories with vulnerability and heart. Watching them embody those voices—many of whom were in the room—was one of the most affecting things I’ve seen in a theater.

To our partners at Everytown, WAVE, Doctors for America, and all the departments at Carthage who supported this work: thank you. And to everyone who showed up with open hearts—whether to speak, listen, or heal—this work is stronger because of you.

What a day.

Terminal Exhale has officially finished their 4 sold out performances at Carthage College.

Congratulations to all the talented performers and crew who helped share these important perspectives in hopes to move those to also help end gun violence.

this past weekend I had the privilege of speaking at @carthagetheatre ‘s event Healing the Healers leading up to their performance of Terminal Exhale.

I reminded the group the firearms are the leading cause of death for children in this country & that a public health approach is crucial to preventing firearm injuries in children. And I got a little choked up reminding the group that the ripple effect of gun violence affects #healthcareworker s too.

Terminal Exhale was amazing and it highlighted the testimony of healthcare workers who are living this trauma every day. Shout out to @a_elisabeth_05 who was a better me than I could have been 🫠
