Kalea Dream - experimental music video by Erwan Tracol.

I met Erwan online when I was a teenager, and we mostly bonded over movies and music.
We’re both from the same part of France - Drôme and Ardèche - and even lived in Lyon at the same time, but never really crossed paths.
Fast forward a few years: I moved to Nantes last October and I realized he was living there too and was involved in an experimental film collective.
One afternoon, I went to check out his work.
He had rolls of film hanging around his neck and showed them to me one by one on a screen in his lab. Totally magical.
I felt an immediate connection between his work and Kalea Dream, and I asked if he’d be down to make a video for the track. And here we are!

The video is an experimental essay with chemigrams on expired 16mm film. Chemigrams are images created without a camera, using only chemicals, resists, and photosensitive materials.

« When Tryphème asked me to make a music video for Kalea Dream, I asked her what the lyrics were about. She told me it was a list of racehorses - so Kalea Dream is the name of a horse. I guess I used chemigrams as a way to imagine what a racing horse’s dream might look like. »

Meet our next artist-in-residence Erwan Tracol from France!

Erwan: I work with moving images on film as a way to let my inner child express himself. I also enjoy sharing what I come upon very much. I have this memory of slowly falling asleep in the back of my mom’s car while looking at the cars headlights coming the other way with my half-closed eyes, I think this is my forever “current field of exploration”.

🫧 Describe your creative process in three words: try, fail, repeat

🫧 Name one exciting thing about being here in Riga, in BAL residency?
Ending a long day of work in the lab by going to the sauna on the Daugava river. Having the opportunity to meet and connect with like-minded people from all around the world.

🫧 Reach me: @cartwolearn / erwan.tracol@gmail.com

🪨Stone Shadow, Filmwerkplaats member Cinzia Nistico @cinzia.n.composer, radio programme, 60’
August 6th 2025 marks 80 years since the Hiroshima bombing. ‘Stone Shadow’ wants to commemorate this atrocity with a surreal Elmo projector’s interview, which becomes a more serious remembrance.
The work uses footage of the atomic bomb detonation, eyewitness extracts, and reports on the bomb’s effects, transformed with counterpoints, distortions, multiple exposures, hand-print processes, and other hands-on-film technique

👂SPECTRAL Device ASMR Sound

Second focus on our other two 2025 residents and 'Opblinken', their newly produced work that will premiere on Sunday 21st at Back to the Future festival.

Erwan Tracol & Laurent Reyes, FR, 2025, 20’, 16mm live performance
Flames shoot up into the sky from the ends of large pipes. Thick smoke billows. A storm is brewing. A swaying figure tries to make its way through. The hectic pace carries us along.

Work produced in the context of this year Filmwerkplaats SPECTRAL Residency.

Erwan Tracol is a member of @mire_nantes (Nantes, FR) whose photographic and filmic work explores the many possibilities of film.
Based in Marseille, Laurent is a filmmaker and a photographer member of the artist-run film lab L’argent @labo_largent. He directs documentaries and experimental films when he is not conducting workshops or swimming in the mediterranean sea.

We are excited to welcome our other SPECTRAL residents of this summer: Erwan Tracol @cartwolearn and Laurent Reyes @_laurent_reyes.
Erwan & Laurent will work in our lab from 12th to 23rd of July on a new expanded cinema project that will premiere at our Back to the Future festival (19-21 September 2025). Their tools are projectors, sound and image loops, and their thumbs. Like gold diggers, Erwan and Laurent strive on stage to discover a nugget that will sparkle on the screen.
They will also guide the workshop ‘Hijacking photochemistry film & its projector devices’ at Filmwerkplaats on the 19th and 20th of July, for which there still are few tickets available (link in bio).

Erwan Tracol is a filmmaker based in Nantes, France. He is a member of the artist-run film lab @mire_nantes, where he learned to love and experiment with silver-based emulsion. His practice is focused on cameraless cinema techniques, the plasticity of celluloid and his relation to memories.

Based in Marseille, Laurent Reyes is a film maker and a photographer member of the artist-run film lab @labo_largent. He directs documentaries and experimental films when he is not conducting workshops or swimming in the mediterranean sea.

‼️🎥WORKSHOP ALERT!
This is a rare opportunity to join a 2-day 16mm film workshop typically reserved for members of our film lab. Don’t miss out on this unique chance to experiment with filmmaking in a creative, hands-on environment.

Dates: Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 July
Time: 11:00-17:00 (ish)
Location: Filmwerkplaats, WORM
Cost: 125 EUR

We’ll explore techniques like Chemigrams, where we create images without a camera using photography chemistry and painting tools, and Projocopter, which turns a projector into a tool for creating loops and sequences. We’ll work in both safelight and daylight, using colour and black & white film, both expired and fresh.

This workshop will be guided by Erwan Tracol from Mire Lab in Nantes (FR) and Laurent Reyes from Marseille (FR). These international artists, bring their unique approaches to experimental filmmaking. Erwan’s work explores the endless possibilities of film, while Laurent’s films embrace the raw, ambivalent nature of life.

By hijacking, reusing and recycling, we find freedom to create with simple tools.

Only a few spots left.
