@civilseedtuc City of Tucson keeps reaping what it sows. Our community keeps paying the price. These excerpts from 'Rent hikes, downtown boom spur gentrification of older Tucson neighborhoods' via AZ Mirror. We suggest reading the whole article.

💥And get the Rally for Housing Justice! Stop Gentrification! On your calendar. July 12 @ 5p, Tucson City Hall - 255 W Alameda 💥
••
Gentrification spurred by ineffective/ nonexistent policies, COT GPLETS, & Mayor & Council's unwillingness to do anything to truly care for our community are pushing more & more people out of their homes, further away from the communities they grew up in, & in many cases, out onto the streets.

There are creative ways for the city to get around AZ no rent control policy. There are many other things Mayor & Council could do - more housing subsidies, converting city property into community run/ controlled housing, etc. M & C are feigning ignorance & doing just enough to be seen doing something but not do anything truly meaningful. Like COT eviction prevention programs.

As @inhibitchin__ from @tucson_tenants_union notes it hard to get actual help from the programs & even when folks do, landlords still evict them.

M & C continually refuse to care for our community. Bc they figured out they can get away with it. We have to stop letting them.

Interesting that the Tucson Office of Economic Initiatives says GPLETS are "a way to bring life to outdated, poorly maintained properties that were hotspots for crime..."
Sound familiar? Like M & C & TPD talking about the bull PNI tactic TPD is using to target, surveil, & over police our BIPOC & poorest neighborhoods. Both of these "strategies" using the same language for reasoning, are systematically destroying those made most vulnerable in our community.

We also suggest watching @az.illustrated Housing Crisis: A Microcosm which looks at residents experience at Monterey Garden Apts & actions organized by @tucson_tenants_union

For the past 30+ years, we have joined our friends and family & hit the streets with clothing and food donations for people who are houseless.
Unfortunately the pandemic has forced us to shift how they will carry out this tradition of giving. In lieu of physical deliveries to the population, we have created a fund to help folks who are in danger of eviction, so they can stay in their homes. We strongly believe, as we do, that #HousingIsAHumanRight. We are teaming up with
@520barrionc and @casa7maria to facilitate the fund. You can donate using the link below - every little bit can make a big difference this holiday and beyond. 1 in 5 Tucson families are experiencing housing insecurity, so please help if you can.

Thanks to Barrio Neighborhood Coalition, and Casa Maria for all the good work they do for the Tucson community.

CALL TO ACTION: Sign & Share our demand letter (LINK IN BIO):

1) There is no end in sight for the pandemic. Therefore, the MORATORIUM ON EVICTIONS must be extended until the pandemic is under control.

2) Likewise, TUCSON WATER, TEP, and SOUTHWEST GAS must keep in effect the SUSPENSION OF UTILITY CUT-OFFS until the pandemic is under control.

3) Public agencies have the capacity to provide direct relief to tenants of public housing. Those families must be protected from eviction. Outstanding rental debt, including utility payments, should be immediately forgiven and future rental payments must be reduced to zero for the duration of the pandemic.

4) Lack of legal representation is a chronic problem which disenfranchises renters. All defendants facing an eviction must be provided the option of a government sponsored or state appointed attorney.

5) Work with our representatives in Congress to obtain sufficient funding from the federal government to help pay rental costs and keep tenants in their homes.

T-SHIRTS FOR TURKEYS 🦃
We are teaming up with @casa7maria this holiday season for the community and our first project is raising money for Thanksgiving turkeys that will be donated to Casa Maria. As we all know, with Covid affecting all of our lives things have different this year! So since a classic turkey drive didn’t seem the safest route we decided to donate a percentage of our total sales for the week of November 16th-22nd to Casa Maria in order for them to purchase turkeys and other necessities they need for the upcoming holidays. We also encourage everyone who is able to make a donation directly to Casa Maria to please do so. Times like these are when we need to look out for one another in our community and we at South Sixth Bodega feel the obligation to try and do our part, because at the end of the day... #EverybodyEats 🙏🏽
