man…the one word for this trip is wow. i have seriously never connected with so many amazing individuals in 4 days as much i did with this group of 113 individuals. I didn’t even get to meet all of you, but you guys are all special in your own way. whether it’s bus rides with mike, remington’s inspiration, darlinda’s humor, zack’s (bubbles) happiness, casen’s friendliness, donald’s humbleness, cole’s ability to make me laugh, sophia’s smile, drew’s joyfulness, brock’s ability to see everyone for who they are, josie’s ability to love, preston’s funniness, bella’s kind-heartedness, JW’s respectfulness, wyatt’s ability to be welcoming, hayden’s ability to be fun, ella’s wittiness, kyler’s amazing stories, jace’s passion, evan and van’s dynamic duo, and finally all of our own ability to be the best version of ourselves. seriously, from the bottom of my heart, ALL 113 of you, your future is the brightest thing in this world and i love every single one of you. CYCLE 2026, please never forget to be yourself and always remember you have someone to talk to. it was so great to hear all of your stories and get to know you guys in such a short time.

I think I forgot the most important thank you letter…
Thank you MAbA class of 2026 for changing the way I view agriculture, community, friendships, individuality, and myself as a whole. From the first day nervous wondering if I’d make it through the week in one piece to day 5 singing karaoke on the bus I realized one thing. The people I’d spent this week with were not just the MAbA class of 2026, they were the future of agriculture, but thats not all we were. We had became FAMILY! From the early morning laughs to the late nights playing games and realizing we were a tad competitive, and even when we saw a opossum in the middle of a city and got in trouble for tying to touch it. One thing happened, we all became a part of each other. So even though I had a thrilling week I didn’t make it back to the Bootheel of Missouri in remotely close to one piece at all. I have 31 missing pieces of me scattered across the state of Missouri, individuals that I will connect with far beyond this past week! With that I carry a great deal of gratitude that my peers chose me as one of the ambassadors for the MAbA class of 2027 alongside Casen Bolton! Thank you MAbA for the opportunity to grow in ways I didn’t even know was possible! Thank you god for providing me with this opportunity to become a bigger light for you and become who I’m meant to be! MAbA class of 2026, you are at the center of my heart! WE BELONG TOGETHER! 💓🪩💋🥳

Competition Breeds Success

"Put more weight on"

"That was easy"

"That wasn't even hard"

"You got more in the tank"

There is a ton of banter that goes on in the gym. There should be. I always try to poke and nudge people to do more or try harder.

Telling them "so and so did this" to get them closer to a level of intensity they need.

Some people think they are close to their best effort and are really "trying" but they aren't.

Some people can flip a switch and will not allow themselves be told they can't do something.

@aydenflippo wasn't even doing a normal bench this morning, and hasn't done one for awhile.

Him and I were going back and forth about what he could or couldn't do looking at his old PR on the leaderboard.

The next conversation went something like this.

Me - "Man this close grip looks easy this morning, but not good enough to have a 200 pound bench press."

Him - "I can do 200 right now no problem."

Me - "No shot, not even close, your last PR was 175."

Him - "Oh yes I can let's find out."

Was the plan to bench PR? No.

Did we try to bench PR? Yes.

Why?

Because that's the mindset and competitive attitude that will serve him later in life.

We should want to always "try" in everything we do. Give our best effort at any given time.

Did he get the 200? No.

He did get a 10 lbs PR of 185.

Why?

Because he was willing to "try" which is what 95% of the people in this world are unwilling to do.

Separate yourself from others by simply trying.

Can you show improvement?

I'm a big "stat guy" or metric guy, whatever you want to call it.

As a baseball coach, I routinely look inside the numbers of our team season to season to continue to show how well we are improving in certain areas or where we still need to make improvements.

As a strength coach, it's not different. I track mostly everything thing I can to continue to show and document our improvements to continue to get better at the process of making my kids the best athletes I can possibly make it.

The high school I work at currently has 91 students enrolled..

Yes, you read the right... 91 9-12th grade.

I hear coaches all the time say "well we are just in a bad cycle of kids right now.."

And I chuckle...

Yes, there are some kids and athletes that have a greater floor and ceiling than others. But we can't allow that to be an excuse in our school.

We HAVE to be committed to the weight room and good strength training to make sure we are increasing athletic output so we give ourselves the best chance to be competitive.

Ever kid has a ceiling, and I will continue to find where it is.

@bateman.brody might be one of the most freak athletes I've ever met (he's a sophomore). Jumped 29" standing vertical when I first met him and 35" on approach back in September.

But that doesn't give him a pass. It's a choice for him to set the standard that no matter what, everyone around here works hard.

One of his goals is to dunk next year.. he's 5' 8", which will require a jump variation like this to be well over 45"

As coaches, we must continue to believe in our kids and set high standards for their abilities. And then make sure we have systems in place that help them achieve.

A lot of it falls on them to put the effort out, but if they're willing, we better be able to provide the path.

He is the first of many that will be over 40" eventually at Wheaton Schools!
