The highlight for today features the first of our two editorials in this issue, titled ‘Innovation Without Guardrails is a Choice — And We’re Making It’, a provoking piece written by Casey Depenbrok. Read below about how Casey’s academic experience and research in AI politics led her to pursue this topic below:

“As a fourth-year Political Science major with a concentration in international politics, I’ve always
been drawn to questions of global conflict, human rights, and the political forces that shape security and instability. My academic interests have been shaped by courses on international security, political violence, and civil wars, as well as my participation in the Honors College and my work as a Research Assistant. As a research assistant for the Politics of AI Governance lab, I began exploring contemporary issues on artificial intelligence which has fueled my passion for pursuing intellectual conversations.

I wanted to become an editor for The Global Affairs Journal because I care deeply about creating
a space where students can share thoughtful, well-researched perspectives on global issues. I believe that in today’s polarized political climate, it’s more important than ever to elevate voices that are curious, critical, and grounded in both theory and lived experience. Being an editor allows me to support writers who are asking bold questions and challenging the way we understand the world. I chose The Global Affairs Journal because it brings together students who are passionate about international affairs and creates an outlet for the conversations on some of the most urgent issues of our time.”
