A sneak peek at what’s coming this spring at JAC!

“NEXT” brings together the next generation of creative voices from Jamestown, showcasing artists whose roots and experiences on the island shape their work. Each piece reflects individuality, community, and the vibrant artistic history of the town.

“In the Zeitgeist” presents François Poisson’s reflections on the past ten years—a decade marked by upheaval and transformation—through his multidisciplinary practice in painting and woodworking. His works, including the enduring Bunny Cars and newer Exhaust Sticks, explore innocence, vigilance, and the American ethos in visually striking forms.

Both exhibitions open Friday, April 10. Don’t miss your chance to experience these powerful, thought-provoking works.

What a year 2024 was!
We hosted 7 gallery exhibitions and 3 artist spotlight exhibitions along with several events- including artists talks and performances, community workshops, author readings, an art book fair, a successful community fundraiser, and several Newport gallery nights.
As we look forward to sharing what’s coming up for our 3rd season, we extend a heartfelt “Thank You!” to the artists we’ve had the pleasure of working and visiting with, and to all who have shown support through generosity, curiosity, and collaboration.

The works in our Upper Gallery highlight artists’ varied interpretations of the familiarity of the surrounding landscape, along with the numerous tiny creatures we cohabitate with, as important aspects of “home.

Slide 2-3: Mark Szantyr “Red Ant Hills”, oil on mdf panel, 12" x 24" “... I became engrossed with a colony of ants, feeding them and watching them carry bits of muffins home.”

Slide 5-6: Rachel Sydlowski “House of Hudson, Greystone”, cyanotype on coventry rag paper
29" x 22" “Collections of flora, decorative objects, and fragments of architecture create an anachronistic matrix that questions the history of place and its various embodiments of home. Cyanotype serves a dual purpose; as a medium for image-making and as a medium closely intertwined with memory and time.”

In preparation for tomorrow's event, Thoughts of Home, featuring readings by local authors, we are highlighting two works in our current exhibition, No Place Like Home, that explore books as a central element of home and their connection to family history.

Tickets for Thoughts of Home are still available on our Website (link in bio).

Slide 1-3: Belle McDonald, Subsolar, turmeric anthotypes, collage, turmeric toned canvas, thread, 12 x12 in
“ This book captures the sunshine that my mother encompasses. Growing up, her protection and care is what felt most like "home", the most comfort, and the most safety. This book is an ode to her.”

Slide 4-5: Francine Weiss, Guide to the Birds, tunnel book, 7.5 x 10.5 x .75 in
“A bird watcher, my father taught me how to identify birds using Roger Tory Peterson’s A Field Guide to the Birds. Whenever I see this book, I’m transported back to my childhood home and feelings of wonder and connection with my father. This tunnel book created from Peter’s Guide is a tribute to my father.”
