(1/4) The past 3 months have been very hard for me. 3 months ago me and my girlfriend ended our relationship of 3,5 years. We lived together for a year. My ex stayed in our house. My company that I co-built for around the same time as my relationship also stopped. In one week I lost my buddy, my partner, my house and my work.

I was staying at friends’ places in Berlin and had a few small trips planned the first two months. I was working with an embodiment coach who was teaching me to be present, feel and not get lost in my thoughts. Stay in the body, see emotions as emotions, listen and care for them. I honestly got better and better, with a proud moment during my one week bike trip on my own. Due to the grounding of the bike I was able to go through many very difficult emotions. I went back to Berlin and continued my practice of staying present and go through anything that would come up. But because I was not biking all day, and the lack of structure and people around me it got too much and I wasn’t able to provide the safety that my nervous system needed while going through heartbreak, emotions regarding my time in Berlin, and trauma.

When I was 18 years old my dad died of suicide. It was after the year I moved to Groningen for studies and joined Vindicat (a Dutch mixed fraternity). I didn’t know anyone in the city. An intense first year of having to find a house, make friends, and a lot of social expectations, while also having to study. There was a heavy drinking culture and I drank a lot.
