One of the fastest—and strangest—ways to hypnotize someone is through confusion.

Pile on enough contradictory instructions, fast enough, and the conscious mind can temporarily lose its grip. As it struggles to make sense of the impossible, it becomes far more open to suggestion as it is trying to figure what is happening. In the hands of a skilled hypnotist, that brief moment of overload can drop a person deep into trance.

Now here's the unsettling part: confusion inductions don't only happen on stage. They may be happening all around us—in media, politics, advertising, and everyday life.

Featuring hypnotherapists Cassandra McLean and Albert Nerenberg.
