Once a sister, always a sister 👯‍♀️

No matter how many years pass, the bonds our sisters make through Alpha Phi will always hold a special place in our hearts. From the countless memories, traditions, and friendships made along the way, being an Alpha Phi is something we carry with us far beyond our college years.

To our amazing alumni - thank you for being part of our story, for continuing to support our sisterhood, and for showing us that the Alpha Phi bond truly lasts a lifetime. 💗

Cameron has spent the last few nights with his mom. He leaves soon for college, so this time is especially precious right now, since only one person can stay overnight with her.

Christine is present for every moment. Even though it is hard, Cameron is starting school and she can’t be there, but there is comfort in him being able to live with his big sister, so they can lean on each other.

Yesterday morning, Cameron shared something that filled us with joy and tears of hope. He said, “Mom spoke her first words to me this morning.”

Her first words were, “What time did you go to bed last night?”

Even here, even now, she is still mothering her baby. Her grown boy.

We are grateful that her body seems to be responding to the antibiotics. Her swallowing is improving, although she hasn’t passed her swallow test yet. She appears to be ignoring the left side of her body, and getting started on rehabilitation for that as soon as possible is critical.

Praying for all these moving parts to come together.

We are thankful for the medical team caring for her and for the family supporting her. So many of you have offered financial gifts, prayers, and support for Christine on her long but hopeful road to recovery.

He has been her support, her encourager, her dad, since she was sixteen.

Many call him Chuck. Grandpa, as well. Christine calls him Dad.

When mom told Christine, “there’s dad, there’s grandpa”, Christine scanned the room. Once she spotted him, she reached out her hand to hold his hand.

Chuck didn’t just marry our mother. He married a mother with six girls, ages seven to sixteen. He showed up and keeps showing up.

Thank you for your prayers, your support, and your financial gifts for Christine’s recovery.

She is still on the neurology floor of the hospital. We are praying that her body heals from the fever and no infection, that she is able to pass the swallow test so rehabilitation can start as soon as possible, and that she does not pick up any secondary infections from this long hospital stay.

We pray for a swift move to rehabilitation, and for our Sister’s body to stay guarded from blood clots, pneumonia, fever, and infection. Give her the strength to pass her swallow test, to have the feeding tube removed, and let her voice return.

We are praying too for all who are enduring these kinds of circumstances right now. The waiting rooms, the long nights, the small victories measured one day at a time. You are not walking it alone.

And we are so grateful for the outpouring of support from family, friends, and even those we don’t even know. Every prayer, every message, every gift, every act of love is appreciated.

A mother, no matter her age, never stops feeling the ache of her child in need.

Our mother stood there with tears in her eyes, watching the ambulance load her up for the life flight to emergency surgery. A stroke that typically happens later in life, and yet her eldest daughter had one.

Christine’s husband and son were already on the road to meet her at the hospital. Her other son is arranging his flight, and her daughter is coordinating her six hour drive to be there, her supportive boyfriend by her side.

Mom kissed her and told her to fight. Our mother is a fierce prayer warrior. It truly is her greatest gift. Then Jeannette & I were driven by my husband in the middle of the night assuring our mom we would be there to support Christine and her husband and son at the hospital and through the surgery.

As the night turned into morning more family arrived weaving in and out throughout this week to show love, care, and support. That’s what family does. Shows up when it truly matters.

Mom recalls Christine’s big brown eyes and smile as a baby, needing her mother close by. Christine worries about mom. She takes good care of her and would never want mom to worry, and that is exactly why I know she is fighting. For her mom. For her children. For her husband. For all of us. And most importantly, for herself.

Even from a young age, Christine has always taken care of everyone else. It is time she comes first. Thank you for helping her to be able to do this through your prayers, sweet words, and financial gifts.

Some seasons ask more of us than we ever planned for.

“This wasn’t our plan, Chris.”

Clark said it through tears, and the weight of those five words sat heavy in the room.

Christine has always been the one carrying the calendar, tracking the details of everyone else’s life, the first to show up with something baked, the first to ask what’s needed and quietly meet it. She has been the steady hand behind so many people without them ever knowing how much she carried.

Now the roles have shifted. He’s a bit lost in this new reality, finding his footing in a season he never planned for. But he is making the brave choices. He is staying strong. He is believing for the best, even while understanding that the months and years of recovery ahead will require more of her leaning on him than she’s ever had to before.

That’s what happens in marriage. There are seasons when one person has to step up more than the other, seasons that ask more than either of you expected to give. It isn’t the plan you wrote down. But it becomes its own kind of beautiful witness, the kind that only shows up when love is tested and chooses to stay anyway.

Christine and Clark have been married 27 years. Their wedding song was “When You Say Nothing At All,” and there is something almost sacred about that now, in this season where she isn’t able to speak yet. The love that promised itself in that song all those years ago is the same love sitting bedside today, saying everything that needs to be said without a single word.

When Cassie played it for her today, a few tears slipped from Christine’s eyes, and Cassie gently wiped them away.

We’re praying for Christine’s continued healing, and for Clark as he steps into this new role with courage.

We are so appreciative of the prayers, kind words shared, and financial gifts offered to support Christine on her journey back to renewed strength and health!

There is a certain kind of tired that only comes from a hospital chair, watching monitors, waiting for a number to move in the right direction.

Christine is our sister, and right now she is fighting. She has four children. Her youngest starts at the University of Wyoming in a couple of weeks. Two of her children are nurses, trained in the very kind of care they are watching their mother receive. Years ago, sweet Catie, their eldest went to be with Jesus. If anyone understands what it costs to keep showing up for the people you love, even when it hurts, it is Christine.

That is exactly what is happening in this room right now. Cassie has not waited on a nurse to tend to her mother. She stays right in the middle of every detail, mothering the way her own mother taught her. We are coordinating our schedules to ensure Christine is never alone and to support her family. Even Jeannette’s favorite blanket is draped over her. This is what a big family looks like when one of us needs the rest of us.

Christine has spent her life making sure she never missed a moment that mattered in her children’s lives and in our lives. She shows up, every time, for every one of us. Now it is our turn to surround her the same way, through prayer, through presence, through simply refusing to not let her be alone in any of this, and thanks to so many with the financial support, it eases a burden as Christine was a full time worker in her case management business.

If you have a moment today, would you pray for Christine. Pray for her swallow test to pass so her feeding tube can be removed and for her blood pressure to stabilize. Please also keep the left side mobility of her body in prayer.

Pray for strength in her body, peace over her children, and rest for a family that has already carried so much. This is not a week’s journey but months, and will likely still be working to regain what was lost over a year or two. But God…so we’ll see.

We are grateful beyond words for everyone who has already stepped in for this family, through prayer, financial, and practical support. We will keep you updated!

It was already a miracle she survived.

There are so many things to consider when crisis comes calling. There is the immediate, critical condition we are still praying for. And there are the next steps: rehabilitation, wanting the best possible support and care in that first 90 days, praying for discernment and availability, and what the journey looks like over the next year or two toward complete restoration. We are believing for a miracle in all of this.

Because it truly already was a miracle that she survived the stroke.

It had been nearly 9 hours from onset to medical care, it did not look like a typical stroke. It simply felt like a bad stomach flu and a headache. As her day progressed, she realized she might need some level of medical care. Urgent care was closed. Her husband said he was going to take her to the ER. She even said she could probably just sleep it off.

Thank God he persisted. She may not be with us today if he had not.

Maybe this is your reminder to err on the side of caution. Do not worry about the extra hospital bill, or about causing work for other people if it turns out to be nothing. It is better to be safe than sorry.

We covet your prayers, and we thank you for them. We are grateful for those who have supported through financial gifts as well. For those who would like to give, the GoFundMe link is pinned at the top of our page. It is nothing either Christine or Clark would have ever asked for or wanted. But this is where community steps in and reminds people that they do not fight alone.

Thank you for standing with Christine and her family, with our family!

Where two or three are gathered: She showed up in love for everyone. Now love shows up for her.

There was a gathering in the ICU waiting room for our sister. You can’t be someone who lights up a room with her big smile, infectious laugh, and very big servant heart and not have this outcome.

Sometimes we generally know these things about people and forget to tell them. Sometimes we take for granted the givers and forget to return the favor. Sometimes it takes a really big life shake to remind us again and again of what matters and what does not.

As we are reminded of her lessons and how precious and fleeting life is, we hope we are reminding you as well.

Christine is the first to volunteer. She gives without asking for anything in return. She is generous and selfless, with a compassionate heart. She is private, and she would never ask for anything for herself because she is always the one giving. That is why we want to pour into her, so she can focus solely on recovering and not the cost of recovering. This is our time to really show up, and that is what we are doing and will do.

Her birthday is coming up, and we want this to be her year, the year that celebrates her overcoming story as she continues to boldly live out her hope filled story.

One of Christine’s nieces (Jeannette’s daughter) started a GoFundMe page for Christine and her family due to this unexpected interruption in both Christine’s and her husband’s work schedules and the long recovery ahead. The link is in the comments below should you want to donate. Thank you.

“Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20

Keep showing up!
