Nervous about your engagement session? Here’s a simple tip to easily improve your photos! If you’re ever unsure what you should be doing with your hands, put them on your partner!

This can be something nonchalant like holding hands, or you can indulge in your romcom fantasies and run your hands through their hair, touch them on the back of the neck, on the small of their back, pull them into you by their waist for a passionate kiss, loop your arm through theirs and snuggle in close, give them a big hug around the shoulders, touch their face, interlace your fingers - all these things are key to natural and authentic photos.

You may be surprised the number of times I’ll ask a couple to go in for a kiss and they have their hands straight down at their sides. From witnessing it almost every session, I’m convinced this is our natural instinct when prompted to kiss (on camera), so don’t worry it’s totally normal BUT almost every time I’m going to remind you to wrap your arms around your partner’s waist and pull them in close or put your hands around their shoulders, in their hair etc for romantic photos that look like 👆🏼👆🏼👆🏼this reel.

At the start of our session we weren’t sure if the sun was going to come out for Cassie and Johnnie’s engagement shoot but when it did peek through the clouds towards the end of our shoot, we took full advantage of it 🌅

There are a few things to consider when choosing to have a beach or outdoor session in general!

You can’t control the weather and that’s okay! Cloudy or overcast lighting is a great natural filter for even skin tones, and while direct overhead sunlight can be harsh, you can still get artsy and creative with it.

It may be windy 💨 and that means hair flying in the wind. Honestly, I’m all about embracing those beautiful wind blown moments that give your photos an extra layer of depth, emotion and movement that brings them to life rather than flat, stiff and perfectly poised photos. We want a little wild wind whipping through our hair for the ultimate natural blowout 😆

If you’re at the beach or out in nature, your shoes, feet, clothes etc are probably going to get dirty, sandy, and possibly wet. Keep this in mind when choosing your outfit and deciding on colors.

Be prepared with a change of shoes if your location requires trekking across some terrain to best utilize the backdrop that’s available to you! Sometimes even a sensible sandal or wedge just won’t cut it when you want photos at a location that requires you to hike a half mile (or more) up or down some rugged terrain. Save yourself the blisters and bring backup shoes that are comfortable to walk in.

Lastly, outdoor locations don’t always have a restroom or private area for easy outfit changes so if you plan on changing your outfit up mid-session, be prepared to layer things on top or slide them on underneath other clothes. I typically have a blanket or towel along to help cover up just enough if there’s a crowd that you don’t want to feel overly exposed in front of.

That’s all my outdoor #engagamentphoto tips for now! Inquire about your session using the link in my bio 📲
