He’s 23 and I couldn’t be prouder. What a privilege to be his mom. What a pleasure to watch him grow. What a man he has become! Gracias Vida! El tiene 23 y yo no podría sentirme mas orgullosa. Que privilegio el de ser su madre. Que placer el verlo crecer y ver el hombre en el que se ha convertido!

My world changed 30 years ago when my dad met us outside the hospital to let us know that at 1:15pm you had been born. I was 13 years old and for nine months, I had been full of fear. It all changed in that moment. I never again was fearful that I’d lose my place in the family and understood that for the rest of my life, I would have someone unconditionally by my side - my little sister. A relationship that would undoubtedly need to reset many times along the way - you were 7 when I became a mother so there has always been a need to recalibrate our roles in each other’s lives - I see you now not just as my blood sister but as my soul sister, a powerful woman with enough love in her heart to change the world. A woman whose smile lights up any room, whose resilience and warm heart impact every person around, whose mischievous old soul turns into the most curiously empathetic woman I know. Muñequita de mi corazón, you will always be my little baby doll and I will always want to be a little bit more like you when I grow up - unapologetically authentic.
Cheers to your first thirty years on this amazing world, hermanita. Thank you for your love and for being the best tia my boys could wish for. May this be the best year yet!

Europe, be kind to my boy. Show him the beauty of your people, your history, your pride. Help him find his way and understand the half of his blood line that comes from your land. Mesmerize him with your art, your monuments, and your rich culture. Entertain him with your not so newly acquired diversity and let him appreciate the human mosaic that converges at your crossroads. Humble him with the grandeur of your palaces and the stories of generations past. Educate him on the ways he can affect the world around him by being empathetic and generous. Let him indulge on the pleasures of your food and the romanticism of your cities. But please, and this I beg you, keep him safe. Allow him to experiment and experience all that you have to offer while keeping him grounded, for there is no better lesson than living your life responsibly and to the fullest. Oh Europe, my indigo boy is becoming a man and is embarking on his most relevant trip to date. He is armed with a loving heart, a warm smile and the most analytical view of the world I have ever seen. He’s not alone, the love and protecting energy of all who know him are with him. He is strong, resilient, creative, intelligent, loving, and humble. He is my pride, my joy, my firstborn and I would do anything for him. Today, my heart skips a beat as I encourage him onto this adventure knowing that it is the best I can do for him right now. Europe, please be kind to my boy.
