Sailing through the Mayan jungle of the Yucatán Peninsula was an experience our Pacific Bridge Club students will never forget!

During our adventure in Celestún, students explored the breathtaking natural beauty of Mexico while spotting alligators, flamingos, and countless species of birds in their natural habitat. Surrounded by lush mangroves and incredible wildlife, our students gained a deeper appreciation for the environment, conservation, and the rich history of the region.

Castlemont High School students left this part of the Yucatán Peninsula feeling inspired, enriched, and more connected to the world around them. These are the moments that remind us why cultural immersion, travel, and experiential learning are so powerful.

Another unforgettable adventure for PBC and another step forward in developing globally minded leaders!

On this day after high school graduation, exactly 1 year since the passing of our beloved brother from another planet. We love you always Boom. Educator, mathematician, ambassador, true leader without ego, only vision, and the smarts to put it all together and stack functions.

We were so lucky to spend time with Dr. Marvin Boomer’s mother and sister, who flew cross country and got a lil taste of #townbiz and the people and places that show the best of who we are together. Proud to make connections across the country that will only strengthen and grow OAK to VA. Thank you to Mama Boom and Deborah our new lil sis for coming out. You are now officially Oakland earring and chained out forever for real.

A lot has happened at the farm this past week!

Thank you to the Butterfly Movement and the Brotherhood of Elders for coming out and hosting our farm workday on May 17th. We got a ton of weeding done and truly appreciate all the help and support.

Dr. Taylor’s classes, along with the Walking Softer Project, helped revamp the orchard and transform it into the beginning of a beautiful outdoor classroom and wellness space in honor of Dr. Boomer for the school community to enjoy.

The Knight Time Market was also a success! Our students brought produce, flowers, handmade bread, and strawberry lemonade to share and sell. We had so much fun and loved seeing the community come together!

Grateful to realign paths with the amazing artist, educator and leader @brittsense and her photography class here at @castlemonthigh Fabrication Lab and Farm, a nexus of art, making, community, healing and ecology.

In order to appreciate what can heal you, you have to first really see it. We learned today from the students that taking these photos at such high quality requires calmness, being at peace with yourself, being patient and observant of everything around you, and developing a sense of timing.

Photos are being produced at large scale and weatherproof in our Fablab as part of our upcoming Civic Summer Studio.

Outdoor displays are combining with built treasure hunt stations to give the farm and nearby creek an augmented overlay, and an endless way for youth and community to create into physical objects, to play and learn every year about their natural environment. #advance #publiceducation #creativity #art #oakland

This was an incredible PBC experience as we were welcomed into a traditional Mayan home by a local family. They shared how their homes are built, what materials are used, and how long they last. We learned that each home can hold up to 8 people, showing the strength of family and community in Mayan culture.
Moments like this go beyond travel—they build understanding, respect, and connection. Truly grateful for the opportunity to learn directly from the people and their way of life. 🌎✨

Sitting here preparing traditional Mayan meals was truly one of the highlights of our journey. It was an experience that allowed us to connect deeply, enrich our understanding, and feel the spirit of the Mayan culture firsthand. We had the opportunity to enjoy dishes that have been prepared and passed down for hundreds of years—and every bite was incredible.

We are deeply grateful to the community of Santa Elena for welcoming us, sharing their traditions, and allowing us to be part of such a meaningful cultural experience. Visiting their community was an honor.

Truly blessed—another unforgettable moment that PBC can proudly check off.

This was by far one of the most amazing and thrilling parts of the trip. We truly grounded ourselves in this powerful energy of the earth—experiencing incredible moments, deep reflection, and a real sense of oneness with nature. Escaping the concrete jungle and stepping into one of the most raw, biodiverse environments is growth in itself. Shoutout to God for making this possible!

Today we had the incredible opportunity to explore the jungles of Celestún on the western edge of the Yucatán Peninsula—and it was nothing short of amazing.

Our students witnessed wildlife in its natural habitat: alligators resting along the water, vibrant flamingos in feeding, raccoons moving through the mangroves, and an abundance of fish and frogs all around us. We even visited areas where jaguars roam under the cover of night.

With every moment, our students were fully present—eyes locked in, grounded in the richness of one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Experiences like this bring learning to life in ways a classroom never could.

The excitement was real, and it only fueled our mission to continue creating opportunities for more Castlemont High School students and OUSD youth to explore the world, connect with culture, and expand their horizons.

So much fun. So much learning. So much growth. 🌎#ousdnews #castlemonthighschool #deepeastoakland #oaklandunifiedschooldistrict #castlemont

To great times in the Yucatán Peninsula! 🇲🇽
We’re absolutely loving it out here. After exploring Chichén Itzá, we headed to a beautiful cenote where the experience leveled up—great food, cliff jumps, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters rooted in Mayan history.
Culture everywhere. Energy unmatched. Memories being made.
This was a day in the books—one where our students connected deeply and grounded themselves in the richness of Mayan culture.
